docs(platform): document the genesis protocol version exception and Swift/Kotlin indentation - #5061
Conversation
…wift/Kotlin indentation The book named a protocol_version comparison inside a generation as the thing that needs a new generation, and described the upgrade ladder and the is_allowed gate as the places that compare on purpose, but not create_genesis_state v1, which adds genesis content behind protocol_version >= N by design: only chains born at 9 or later run it, and all of them are re-created per release. Describe it in the Versioned Dispatch chapter and point to the three exceptions from the coding conventions. .editorconfig gave Swift and Kotlin the 2-space default while all Kotlin files and nearly all Swift files use 4 spaces; add their section, and say so in AGENTS.md. Final review — Phase 1 only (trivial change)
The documentation and editor-settings changes introduce no runtime or consensus changes. The protocol-version-9 threshold for genesis generation 1 is correct, but the new enumeration of intentional protocol-version comparisons is narrower than the code it describes. The two supplied suggestions overlap and are consolidated into one documentation-accuracy finding.

In `book/src/contributing/coding-conventions.md`:
- [SUGGESTION] book/src/contributing/coding-conventions.md:87-91: Avoid presenting the documented protocol-version comparisons as an exhaustive list
“The places that compare `protocol_version` on purpose” presents these three cases as exhaustive, while the corresponding genesis paragraph restricts the exception to `create_genesis_state_v1`. The fresh-chain initialization path also deliberately gates withdrawal trees in `Drive::add_initial_withdrawal_state_structure_operations` (`packages/rs-drive/src/drive/identity/withdrawals/paths.rs:43–63`) at versions 4 and 14. Every current Drive initialization generation reaches that helper, and the version-4/version-14 upgrade rungs create the corresponding trees for existing chains. This is directly relevant to the PR's goal of preventing false flags on genesis initialization.
Other existing comparisons also need to remain intact, including the pre-version-9 wrapping-arithmetic branches in `DocumentPropertyType` and the activation check in `SystemContractCache`. Their existence does not establish a blanket exception for introducing new behavior into shipped generations. Make the enumeration explicitly non-exhaustive, describe the genesis exception as covering the relevant Drive initial-state helpers as well, and distinguish preserved historical comparisons from patterns recommended for new changes.

…nges Review follow-up: the list read as exhaustive. Name it as the patterns for new changes, include the Drive helpers that build the initial state structure (add_initial_withdrawal_state_structure_operations gates on 4 and 14 at chain creation), and say that older comparisons such as the pre-version-9 arithmetic in DocumentPropertyType stay for replay but are not a pattern to copy. Re-review — Final review — Phase 1 only (trivial change)
Verified the supplied finding and prior reconciliation against exact head cfbee48. The new nitpick is contradicted by the implementation: both withdrawal trees gated at protocol version 4 are sum trees. The prior documentation issue is fixed, leaving no verified in-scope findings.

Basic explanation
What this does: two documentation fixes where the written rules disagreed with how the project actually works.
if protocol_version >= 14inside already-shipped code is not allowed and needs a new version of the code instead. The project deliberately makes one exception that the book never mentioned: new system contracts are added to the genesis code (version 1) behind exactly such a check, because only short-lived test networks ever run that code. The book now describes that exception and why it is safe.Value: reviewers and contributors stop flagging the genesis pattern as a violation, and editors stop reformatting Swift and Kotlin files to 2 spaces.
Risks: None. Documentation and editor settings only.
