Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
Verified the Phase-2 review conclusions against exact head ef12ba0. The genesis registry lookup, feature-gated mock fee generation, saved-state coverage, refund assertions, and workload-preserving restart tests support the reviewers' clean assessment; the activation-crossing assertion also contains the reported fix. No actionable in-scope findings remain; tests were not independently rerun during this verification.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
Reviewed the complete diff and relevant fee lookup, initialization, persistence, and replay paths; no actionable in-scope defects were found. The genesis entry preserves existing generation-1 pricing, while the feature-gated mock and workload-preserving restart tests exercise fee-generation boundaries without modifying shipped schedules. Local validation passed platform-version tests with and without mock-versions, platform-state compatibility tests, protocol-upgrade and refund suites, both boundary simulations, existing upgrade/restart regressions, and git diff --check; the worktree remains clean.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)
The fee-generation changes preserve production fee lookup behavior while recording the genesis generation and exercising upgrades, historical refunds, and saved-state recovery with a mock generation. No actionable in-scope findings remain after source verification. Local tests passed for platform-version with and without mocks, platform-state persistence, epoch upgrades, refund vectors, both fee-boundary simulations, and existing upgrade/restart regressions; the worktree remains unchanged.

…mock protocol version on the latest tables No shipped schedule carries a fee_version_number other than 1, so the fee registry, the epoch-change hook, the saved-state round trip and the history-driven refund path had no input that exercised a second generation. Add TEST_FEE_VERSION_DOUBLED_STORAGE (FEE_VERSION2 with a shifted generation number and a doubled storage disk usage rate) and TEST_PLATFORM_V4 (PLATFORM_V14 with that schedule) under mock-versions, register the mock in the test protocol registry, and resolve shifted fee numbers through the test registry in FeeVersion::get and get_optional. Production registries and every shipped PLATFORM_V* are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tform state The epoch-change hook records a fee generation only on the first non-genesis epoch change, so a chain whose genesis schedule is not generation 1 would refund bytes stored in epoch 0 at generation 1 rates forever: the lookup falls back to the first registered generation below the earliest entry. Seed the genesis entry with the registry entry of the genesis schedule's number in PlatformState::default_with_protocol_versions. Unobservable on every existing network: their genesis generation is 1, which is exactly the fallback, and the fee history lives in the saved state, not in the app hash. Saved states created before the entry was recorded keep working through the same fallback branch of the hook. Also add platform-version-parameterised variants of the identity setup and state-transition processing test helpers so boundary tests can run under a mock version. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ion boundary Drive the doubled-storage mock generation through the real block loop with the state's fee history: bytes stored after the generation activated refund at the doubled rate, bytes stored in the genesis epoch of a chain started at the mock refund at the genesis generation's rate (which only holds because the initial state records that generation), and a sectioned removal under a non-first generation is rejected without the fee history. Each run is compared against the same workload under the latest schedule, so a refund priced at the wrong generation is off by exactly a factor of two. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… against its saved state Two chain simulations cross into the doubled-storage mock generation: an upgrade from the latest protocol version that activates at epoch 2, and a chain started at the mock. Each runs one workload twice, once continuously and once stopped at the same block, reopened from the persisted state and continued with the mutated strategy, identities, signer and nonce counters of the first segment, so both segments execute the same transitions. The runs must agree on every root hash, transition result, identity balance and the fee history, and every block re-runs process_proposal as an independent validator. The harness outcome now returns the transitions the strategy submitted per block, so a test can prove two runs executed the same workload. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…he boundary continuation The independent validator path verifies the chain lock of every proposal it did not build, so the boundary simulations sign their chain locks with a distinct chain-lock quorum type. The harness also puts the deployed start contracts back into the strategy after remapping the operations, so the continuation clears them instead of asserting they are gone; otherwise the second segment would redeploy the contract and stop touching the documents written before the split. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… and the recorded fee history Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…n activation The upgrade simulation asserted that a document created by the split block was deleted after activation, which a document written and removed under the doubled generation could satisfy. Require a document created before the activation block instead, so the refund path is exercised on bytes stored under the genesis generation and removed under the new one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…s in the boundary tests After the rebase the latest version writes saved-state structure 1, a record that cannot be decoded on its own, so the round trip now goes through the standalone record for structure 0 and through the structure 1 record rebuilt with its entries. Document ids commit to the identity contract nonce since protocol version 14, so the boundary helper derives the id the transition will carry before it queries and deletes the document. The boundary vectors use the upstream processing helper, which reads the version from the block state, instead of a version-parameterised variant that duplicated it. Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The fee-generation registration, genesis history initialization, and replay coverage are consistent with the surrounding versioned architecture, and I found no blocking correctness or consensus defects. Three non-blocking review items remain: the saved-state test does not cover all KnownCostItem variants, the shifted-range predicate is duplicated, and a test-only registry constant exposes a broader API than current in-crate usage requires. The Rust workspace failure is reported as an unrelated base-branch schema test failure; some JavaScript checks remain pending.

In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/platform_types/platform_state/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/platform_types/platform_state/mod.rs:400-406: Cover every KnownCostItem in the saved-state round-trip test
The round-trip helper compares only the five storage-related KnownCostItem variants, while the saved-state invariant concerns resolving a fee generation through its registry for all cost lookups. The enum currently has 14 variants, including identity-processing, hashing, and signature-verification costs. A registry or deserialization mistake that preserved storage rates but changed another cost category would pass this test. Include the remaining variants, with representative sizes for the parameterized hash items, so the test covers the invariant it is intended to protect.
In `packages/rs-platform-version/src/version/fee/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-version/src/version/fee/mod.rs:76-110: Centralize the shifted test-fee-version predicate
The condition `version >> TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION_SHIFT_BYTES > 0` is duplicated in `FeeVersion::get` and `FeeVersion::get_optional`. These functions must classify every shifted number identically: `get` returns an error for an unknown test number, while `get_optional` returns `None`. Keeping the classification logic in two separate copies creates an avoidable future consistency hazard for fee-history lookups. Extract a shared small helper, gated by `mock-versions`, and call it from both methods.
In `packages/rs-platform-version/src/version/protocol_version.rs`:
- [NITPICK] packages/rs-platform-version/src/version/protocol_version.rs:74-75: Keep the default mock-version registry crate-visible
`DEFAULT_PLATFORM_TEST_VERSIONS` is declared `pub` but every current reference is inside the `platform-version` crate. The mock-versions feature already exposes the individual test fixtures and registry for test consumers, but this aggregate constant does not currently need to be part of the public API. Restricting it to `pub(crate)` avoids expanding the exported surface without changing any current call site.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Track storage-epoch pricing for refunds after live fee-rate increases — The existing refund path prices removed bytes using the current epoch's storage rate rather than the fee generation active when those bytes were stored. If a future live generation increases storage rates, data stored under the cheaper generation could receive an inflated deletion refund. This is not introduced by the current diff and is explicitly part of the follow-up storage-epoch work, but it should remain tracked because it affects refund and pending-pool conservation.
- Follow-up: Track the storage-epoch pricing change in the R05-05 follow-up issue or a separate maintainer-requested PR.
…nd trip The round-trip check compared only the five storage cost items, so a registry mistake that kept storage rates but changed another cost would have passed. Compare the schedule each epoch resolves to instead. FeeVersion::get_optional now delegates to get, so the shifted test number range is classified in one place. The default mock registry constant is only used inside platform-version and is now pub(crate). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The reviewed changes correctly register the mock fee generation, seed genesis fee history, preserve fee-generation resolution across saved-state formats, and add replay coverage across the fee boundary. I found no blocking correctness, consensus, security, or architectural defects. One documentation example still omits the newly added TEST_PLATFORM_V4 entry; workspace, JavaScript, Kotlin, and hygiene checks were still pending in the supplied CI snapshot.

💬 Nitpick: Update the mock-version registry example for TEST_PLATFORM_V4
book/src/versioning/platform-version.md:363-364
The default mock-version registry now contains TEST_PLATFORM_V2, TEST_PLATFORM_V3, and TEST_PLATFORM_V4 in packages/rs-platform-version/src/version/protocol_version.rs, but this documentation example still initializes it with only V2 and V3. The PR correctly adds genesis fee-history registration and boundary/replay coverage, but saved-state restoration still panics when it encounters an unknown persisted fee-generation number. This contradicts the documented compatibility behavior and can prevent a node from restarting after reading state written by a build with a newer or mock-only fee generation. The new test harness also has two non-blocking quality issues around epoch context and unconditional transition cloning. The Rust workspace test failure appears unrelated: it is the pre-existing data-contract schema failure described in the PR discussion.

🔴 Blocking: Return an error for unknown fee generations during saved-state restore
packages/rs-drive-abci/src/platform_types/platform_state/platform_state_for_saving/v1/mod.rs:156-160
The PR makes non-first-generation fee numbers part of persisted platform state and documents that a production build without mock-versions rejects those numbers. However, structure 0 restoration still resolves each stored number with FeeVersion::get(...).expect(...), so an unknown number aborts the node instead of returning the existing saved-state/deserialization error. Structure 1 has the same panic at packages/rs-drive-abci/src/platform_types/platform_state/platform_state_for_saving/v2/mod.rs:236-240. A state written by a mock-enabled build, or by a future build with a newer generation, can therefore turn an expected compatibility rejection into a startup crash. Propagate the lookup error from both conversion paths, including the epoch and fee-generation number in the error context.

🟡 Suggestion: Avoid retaining cloned transitions for every strategy run
packages/rs-drive-abci/tests/strategy_tests/execution.rs:1032
The shared strategy execution loop now clones the complete transition vector and stores it in state_transitions_per_block for every invocation of run_chain_for_strategy. All existing strategy tests pay this allocation and retain a second copy of every submitted transition, including potentially large documents, signatures, and proofs, even though they do not inspect the new field. Make transition capture opt-in for the boundary tests, or record only the serialized bytes needed for replay comparison, so normal strategy runs do not incur this memory and cloning overhead.

I'm leaving this one as is. EpochInfoV0::default() comes from the base's shared process_state_transitions_with_results helper, which this PR uses but doesn't change, and other drive-abci tests rely on it too. The boundary assertions don't depend on it: they read the deletion's FeeResult, whose refund is priced during state transition execution from block_info.epoch and the state's fee history. The stored document's storage flags are also read back to pin the epoch each write landed in. Block-end processing only books those fees into the pools, and assert_credits_balanced checks that. Giving the shared helper real epoch context would be a change to a base helper with its own blast radius, so it belongs in a separate PR.

Still applies (re-reviewed at 22751848): The transition-level fee and storage-flag assertions correctly use the supplied block epoch, but the helper still sends epoch-0, epoch-change metadata to block-end processing. The balance check proves conservation only; it does not prove that epoch-specific distribution and pending-refund branches behaved as they would for the tested epoch.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fair point that the balance check only proves conservation, so I tried it. I added a variant of the shared helper that takes the epoch info, and passed the block's epoch with is_epoch_change: false for these mid-epoch blocks. Block-end processing then failed with PathParentLayerNotFound for key m under the epoch pool tree ([0, 0x0100] for epoch 0, [0, 0x0102] for epoch 2). Making the fast-forwards process the epoch change as well failed in the epoch-change batch itself (InvalidPath under [0]).
Those pool trees only exist on a chain that walked every epoch change in order, starting with a first block flagged as an epoch change. The helper's EpochInfoV0::default() is what makes block-end processing runnable after a fast-forward at all. Real epoch context therefore needs a harness that walks the epochs one at a time, which would change every test built on fast_forward_to_block, so I've reverted the attempt.
The epoch-specific distribution and pending-refund behaviour across a real boundary is covered by the two strategy tests in fee_version_boundary_tests.rs. They run every block through the full ABCI path, with real epoch changes, and compare root hashes against a reopened replay. These unit vectors pin the transition-level refund pricing and the storage flags.

…d platform state Both saved-state readers resolved each recorded fee version number with expect, so a number the build does not know (one written by a build with mock versions or with a newer fee generation) crashed the node on restart instead of failing the load. Both now return a corrupted state error naming the epoch and the number, and tests feed an unregistered number through the standalone record and the structure 1 record. Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The fee-generation registry, genesis-history seeding, and saved-state error handling are coherent, and the previously blocking restore panic is fixed. Two non-blocking test-harness concerns remain: every strategy outcome now retains cloned transition history, and the new boundary vectors run block-end fee processing with synthetic epoch-0 metadata. Relevant Rust workspace tests are still in progress in CI.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4704#discussion_r4382284841)
The boundary helpers pass epoch-specific `BlockInfo` values into transition processing, so the transition fee and refund calculation use the intended epoch. However, the shared `process_state_transitions_with_results` helper constructs `BlockExecutionContextV0` with `EpochInfoV0::default()`, which reports epoch 0 and `is_epoch_change = true` even for the epoch-2 and epoch-3 vectors. Block-end fee distribution, pending-refund handling, and epoch-pool updates therefore run through the synthetic epoch-0-change path. The stored flags and `FeeResult` assertions do not validate that epoch-dependent block-end behavior; build the context from the supplied block and prior state, or add a boundary-local helper that does so.
…est asks for them The strategy loop cloned every submitted transition into a per-block map, and the outcome now returns that map, so every strategy run kept a second copy of its whole workload. NetworkStrategy gains record_submitted_state_transitions, off by default; the fee-version boundary tests set it and assert that the map they compare is not empty. @thepastaclaw on retaining cloned transitions: you're right that returning the map made every run keep it, even though the clone itself is older. Fixed in e7e4a13. On the epoch context in the block-end helper, I've replied in the thread with what I tried and why it needs a different harness. Issue being fixed or feature implemented
Part 1 of 2 for R05-05 (smart-contract plan #4626, workstream issue #4689, preparation package #4675): repair fee-version registration and historical refund lookup, and add replay coverage across a fee-version boundary, before the infrastructure work merges.
Two gaps on the current tree:
fee_version_numberother than 1, and the number-1 arm ofconsume_to_fees_v0never reads the fee history. The registry lookup, the epoch-change hook, the saved-state round trip and the history-driven refund path are therefore untested for any generation that is not the first.PlatformState::default_with_protocol_versionsstarted with an empty fee history and the epoch-change hook only records a generation on the first non-genesis epoch change. On a network whose genesis schedule is not generation 1, bytes stored in epoch 0 would be refunded at generation 1 rates forever, because the lookup falls back to the first registered generation below the earliest entry.Refs #4675

None observable. The genesis seed changes the fee history of a freshly initialised chain from
{}to{0 -> registry entry of the genesis schedule's number}. Every existing network (mainnet, testnet, every devnet) has genesis generation 1,FeeVersion::get(1)isFEE_VERSION1, and an empty map resolves every epoch toFeeVersion::first(), the same constant; so everyKnownCostItemlookup, every refund and every root hash is identical before and after the change for every reachable input. The fee history lives in the saved platform state (GroveDB aux), not in the merkelised tree, so the extra entry does not touch the app hash. Existing saved states are untouched because init chain does not rerun; the hook's empty-map branch still covers them. The first network whose genesis schedule carries a new number is the boundary at which the seed becomes observable, and it is correct from block 1 there. Production registries and every shippedPLATFORM_V*are byte-identical; no newvNgeneration, no consensus error, proto, SDK or FFI change.Decisions taken (provisional values)
FEE_VERSION2: the number keys storage-refund behaviour and storage rates never changed, so renumbering would move protocol versions 9 to 14 onto the history-driven path in shipped code.init_chaingeneration: there is no unreleased protocol version on this tree to gate it on, and the change has no reachable observable effect on existing networks.PLATFORM_V15and must move to the newest shipped table when a protocol version is introduced (doc comment onTEST_PLATFORM_V4).FEE_STORAGE_VERSION1); the value is a test constant, not a provisional protocol number.ChainLockConfig::default(), four chain-lock quorums) because the independent validator path verifies the chain lock of every proposal it did not build; the harness only signs locks when the chain-lock quorums are distinct from the validator set.v5.0-dev, after the storage-epoch refund rule lands) adds the pre-boundary vector that the current refund rule cannot pass and reworks the "increasing fees" test.Checklist:
