Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Block files are the bulk of a node's disk usage and are stored as raw serialized blocks. Measured over 20 random mainnet block files, zstd level 3 shrinks a block by 19% on its own at about 400 MB/s; undo records shrink by 23%.
On a current mainnet node that is about 41 GB of block files and 6.4 GB of undo files, so roughly 7.5 GB and 1.4 GB saved; decompression runs at disk speed, so reads stay disk-bound.

What was done?

Each new block record in blk*.dat and undo record in rev*.dat can be written as one zstd frame. The high bit of the record's size field marks a compressed payload, so records stay self-describing for reindex and existing files are read as before and never rewritten. A record that would not shrink is stored plain, which keeps every stored payload within the existing size limits. The undo checksum keeps covering the uncompressed data.

All readers go through a new ReadRawBlockFromDisk that masks the flag and decompresses when needed: ReadBlockFromDisk, the reindex scanner in LoadExternalBlockFile and TxIndex::FindTx. The txindex format is unchanged; offsets stay relative to the serialized block. P2P, RPC, REST, ZMQ, indexes, wallet rescans, pruning and -loadblock work unchanged on top of that.

The level comes from the new -blockcompression=<level> option. The default in this release is 0, so nothing changes on disk unless the operator opts in, and a 24.1 node can be downgraded to 24.0 without reindex in the default configuration. v25 is planned to enable level 3 by default; since 24.1 already reads compressed records, a downgrade from v25 to 24.1 will not need a reindex either. Levels above 5 produce a startup warning since they cost several times the CPU for no measurable gain.

zstd is an optional build dependency like ZeroMQ: --with-zstd defaults to auto, --without-zstd and NO_ZSTD=1 for depends turn it off, and ENABLE_ZSTD tells the code whether it is linked. A build without zstd accepts only -blockcompression=0, refuses to start on block files whose tip record is compressed with a message naming both ways out (a build with zstd, or -reindex), and reports any other compressed record it meets as unreadable.

contrib/linearize/linearize-data.py reads flagged records (via the zstandard module or Python 3.14's compression.zstd) and always writes plain records to bootstrap.dat. test/config.ini reports ENABLE_ZSTD so functional tests can gate checks on it.

How Has This Been Tested?

New unit tests in blockmanager_tests write a compressible block and undo record, check the flag and the stored size against the serialized size, read them back, check reindex accounting against the stored record, check level 0 stores plain records and that a hand-written legacy record still reads. util_tests covers compress/decompress round trips, empty input, truncated frames, garbage and the content-size bound, and the no-zstd stubs.

feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup runs with compression on, prunes compressed block and undo files, reads a surviving block, expects a pruned one to be reported as pruned and checks the surviving records carry the flag when the build has zstd. feature_reindex, feature_init, feature_txindex, rpc_blockchain, rpc_rawtransaction, rpc_getblockfrompeer, feature_pruning and feature_loadblock were run with compression enabled where their assertions allow it. Tests whose assertions depend on blocks-per-file counts or on incompressible padding pin -blockcompression=0.

Built and run with --enable-werror in both configurations, with system libzstd and with --without-zstd; every commit builds in the no-zstd configuration.

Breaking Changes

None in the default configuration. With -blockcompression above 0, block files become unreadable for versions before this one and for builds without zstd; both need -reindex to recover. Nodes that never set the option can downgrade freely.
Once enabled in v25, downgrade v25 -> v24.0 will require reindex, but v25 -> v24.1 will stay free of breaking changes.

Block files and potentially some records in evodb [such as snapshots of masternode lists] are easy to be compressed up to 20%

Add the depends package (static library, headers and pkg-config file), the configure check, the CPPFLAGS/LDADD wiring, the host-package lists for the non-depends CI jobs and the build docs.

The library is optional like ZeroMQ and BerkeleyDB, since it only saves disk space: --with-zstd defaults to auto, --without-zstd and NO_ZSTD=1 for depends turn it off, and ENABLE_ZSTD tells the code whether it is linked.
Thin wrappers around the one-shot libzstd API so callers never include <zstd.h> themselves.
Decompression only accepts frames that record their content size and bounds that size by a caller-supplied maximum, which lets the block store reject malformed records without over-allocating.

Builds without zstd keep the same interface: ZstdAvailable() reports the difference, compression returns nothing and decompression always fails, so callers store data uncompressed and report compressed data they cannot read.
Every reader of a block record deserialized straight from the file at the indexed position and never looked at the 8-byte record header, and txindex seeked to a transaction offset inside the stored bytes. Neither can work once a stored record may be a zstd frame of the block.

Introduce ReadRawBlockFromDisk, which reads the record header, masks the new BLOCK_RECORD_COMPRESSED flag out of the size field, reads the payload and decompresses it when flagged, and make ReadBlockFromDisk, the reindex scanner and TxIndex::FindTx consume the returned block bytes.
The index format is unchanged: transaction offsets stay relative to the serialized block.
Nothing writes flagged records yet, so behaviour is unchanged.
Block files are the bulk of a node's disk usage.

zstd level 3 saves 19% per block at ~400 MB/s, and higher levels add nothing per block.
Compress each newly written block into one zstd frame and flag the record through the high bit of its size field, so the record stays self-describing for reindex and old records are untouched.
Blocks that would not shrink are stored as before, which keeps the stored payload within MaxBlockSize().

The level comes from the new -blockcompression option (default 3, 0 stores blocks uncompressed, a warning above 5).
To keep backwards compatibility for case of downgrade, default option that is used in the nearest release will be 0, but after that it will be lifted to 3 as release will be proven as stable.

During reindex the block file accounting takes the stored record size rather than the serialized size, so pruning usage and the next write offset stay exact for compressed files.

A build without zstd stores blocks uncompressed: its default level is 0 and any other value is an init error.
It cannot read compressed records, so after the block index loads it checks the tip's record and refuses to start on block files written with compression, naming both ways out: a build with zstd, or -reindex, which skips the compressed records and re-downloads those blocks.
Functional tests have no way to tell whether the node under test was built with zstd, so they cannot check anything about compressed records without failing on a build that cannot write them. Export ENABLE_ZSTD to test/config.ini like ENABLE_ZMQ and add is_zstd_compiled() for tests to gate such checks on.
…linearize-data.py

This commit temporary enables zstd with default value 3 and ensures that all functional tests completes correctly.

feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup: this script only asserts that two files get removed, which does not depend on blocks-per-file counts, so it now runs with compression on.
Compressed empty blocks are small enough that 800 blocks leave file 1 above the prunable height, so it mines 1200 and prunes at 1000, which also holds for the uncompressed layout of a build without zstd.
It additionally reads a surviving block, expects the pruned one to be reported as pruned and, when the build has zstd, checks that the first record of every surviving block file carries the compressed flag.

rpc_rawtransaction.py running the pruned node with compression on moved the end of the first 64 KiB block file from about height 365 to the range 385..410, depending on the block contents, so pruneblockchain(400) left the file in place on some machines and the test failed with -1. Prune at 500 instead: the first file cannot hold that many blocks at any record size, and the MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP cap at that point of the test is 516.

linearize-data.py learns the flagged record format and decompresses such records with the zstandard module (or Python 3.14's stdlib), always writing uncompressed records to the bootstrap file so it stays portable.

feature_pruning.py has strict checks for amount of blocks that should be pruned, disabled compression for this test
Undo data in rev*.dat is stored uncompressed and makes up about an eighth of the block storage; per-record zstd at level 3 saves 23% of it on 20 random mainnet rev files.
Undo records now use the same high-bit flag in the size field as block records, with the level taken from -blockcompression. The checksum keeps covering the uncompressed data, so UndoReadFromDisk reads the stored payload, decompresses it when flagged and verifies the checksum over the result before deserializing.

SpanReader gains ignore(), which the script decompressor calls when a block undo record is deserialized from a buffer.

v24.1 is a minor release and must not have any breaking changes.
Block records written compressed can only be read by versions that know the flagged record format; anything older needs -reindex and that's a breaking change.
With the default at 0 a 24.1 node keeps writing records plain unless the operator forced it, so a downgrade from 24.1 to 24.0 stays reindex-free in the default configuration.

Reading is unaffected by the level: 24.1 reads compressed block and undo records whether or not it writes them. That is what makes the next step safe.
v25 will turn compression on by default, and because 24.1 already reads compressed records, a downgrade from v25 to 24.1 needs no reindex either; the 24.1 node continues the same block files with plain records. Though 25.0 -> 24.0 will require reindex.

Operators who set a non-zero level on 24.1 accept that a downgrade to 24.0 or earlier requires -reindex, as the release notes say. The help text and release notes now describe the default as 0 and the v25 plan.

Walkthrough

The change adds optional Zstandard compression for block and undo records, with configuration and build-dependency support. Storage writes compressed payloads when compression is enabled and the compressed payload is smaller. Block readers, block-file import, transaction lookup, and the linearization tool handle compressed records. Startup validates compression settings and checks for compressed records in builds without Zstandard. Tests and documentation cover storage, pruning, build options, and compatibility.

P1 Badge Accept undo records larger than 32 MiB

A consensus-valid CBlockUndo is not bounded by the serialized block size: for example, a small transaction can spend a few thousand UTXOs whose spendable scripts are each near MAX_SCRIPT_SIZE, producing more than 32 MiB of undo data while the block remains well below MaxBlockSize(). WriteUndoDataForBlock() writes that record without this limit, but this check (and the matching decompression bound) then rejects it, so a reorg or the default startup verification reports a valid database as corrupt, and reindexing recreates the same unreadable undo record.

P2 Badge Stream large undo records instead of duplicating them

When a valid block spends many large-script UTXOs, its undo data can be hundreds of MiB even though the block itself is capped at 2 MiB. These lines first materialize the complete serialized undo and then BuildRecordPayload() copies it again at level 0; with compression enabled, an incompressible record also holds a zstd output buffer while making the fallback copy. This changes the previous streaming write into multi-gigabyte peak memory for the largest valid records and can OOM otherwise adequately sized nodes while connecting such a block.

P2 Badge Select level 0 for no-zstd functional runs

In a build configured with --without-zstd (or where auto-detection does not find libzstd), AppInitParameterInteraction() rejects every nonzero -blockcompression value before the node starts. This base functional test unconditionally passes level 3, and its is_zstd_compiled() guard is only reached after startup, so the supported no-zstd functional suite now fails this test instead of exercising the original pruning behavior.

Extend the no-zstd startup guard beyond the active tip.

The guard at src/init.cpp:2121-2127 rejects startup only when the active tip's block record is compressed. A node that wrote compressed records and later restarted at level 0 has an uncompressed tip. On a build without zstd, that node passes the guard while older block and undo records remain compressed. The guard never checks undo records.

Reads of those older records fail. In a no-zstd build, UndoReadFromDisk returns false for a compressed record (src/node/blockstorage.cpp:619-622). DisconnectBlock then returns DISCONNECT_FAILED (src/validation.cpp:2336-2338). A reorg that must disconnect a block with a compressed undo record can therefore fail. ReadRawBlockFromDisk also fails with a logged error on compressed block records (src/node/blockstorage.cpp:941).

Check all retained block and undo records, not only the tip. Alternatively, persist a marker when the first compressed record is written, and refuse startup on a no-zstd build when that marker is set. A full scan adds startup I/O. The marker needs a storage change. Choose one approach before implementation.

Extend the no-zstd startup guard in the Init flow beyond chainman.ActiveTip():
detect compressed records across all retained block and undo data and reject
startup when any are present. Preserve the existing reindex bypass and error
behavior; do not rely solely on BlockRecordCompressed for the active tip.

Log skipped compressed blocks at normal level when zstd is unavailable.

During -reindex, LogPrint(BCLog::REINDEX, ...) may be hidden. A no-zstd build can skip compressed records, complete reindex, and rely on peers to redownload missing blocks. A node without peers can remain missing that local block data, without a visible cause. Do not abort the documented recovery path.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Pass -blockcompression=3 only when the build has zstd support.

A build without zstd accepts only -blockcompression=0. Startup fails with "-blockcompression requires a build with zstd support." The node never starts, so this test fails in every --without-zstd build.

The is_zstd_compiled() check already gates the compression assertion in run_test(). Apply the same gate here. self.config is available in set_test_params() because parse_args() runs first.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The PR introduces blocking compatibility failures for valid large undo records and for no-zstd nodes retaining compressed historical block or undo records. The no-zstd functional test configuration and executable permission also fail in supported builds, while the zstd helper triggers cppcheck warnings and documentation contains inaccurate terminology. The supplied CI snapshot has the lint job failing, with build and test jobs skipped.

🔴 Blocking: Restore the functional test executable permission
test/functional/feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py:1

The PR changes this script from mode 100755 to 100644 while retaining its shebang. lint-files.py requires every file with a first-line shebang to have executable permission, so the lint job fails on this mode change.

In `src/node/blockstorage.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/node/blockstorage.cpp:603-624: Do not cap valid undo records at MAX_SIZE
The reader rejects any undo payload larger than MAX_SIZE (32 MiB) and passes the same bound to decompression, but consensus does not impose a 32 MiB aggregate limit on CBlockUndo. A block under the block-size limit can spend many UTXOs whose scriptPubKeys are near MAX_SCRIPT_SIZE, producing an undo record larger than 32 MiB. WriteUndoDataForBlock() imposes no corresponding limit, so the node can write a valid record that later fails during startup verification, reorg disconnect, or reindex. This also makes existing large legacy undo records unreadable.
- [SUGGESTION] src/node/blockstorage.cpp:867-880: Avoid duplicating large undo records in memory
The previous undo write path streamed CBlockUndo to disk. This implementation first materializes the complete serialized undo record in DataStream, then BuildRecordPayload() copies it again for an uncompressed record and may additionally retain a zstd output buffer while deciding whether compression wins. Once the reader accepts valid undo records larger than MAX_SIZE, pathological but valid blocks can create hundreds of MiB of redundant allocations and cause otherwise viable nodes to run out of memory. Use a streaming or bounded/chunked write and compression path rather than retaining multiple full-record copies.

In `src/init.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/init.cpp:2121-2126: Detect compressed historical records before starting without zstd
The no-zstd startup guard checks only the active tip's block record. If the tip is plain because compression was disabled or the record was incompressible, older blk files or rev files can still contain compressed records and startup succeeds. Later historical block reads fail, and a reorg that needs a compressed undo record fails in DisconnectBlock(). The guard must detect compressed records across retained block and undo data, or use a persistent marker recording that compressed records exist.

In `test/functional/feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py`:
- [BLOCKING] test/functional/feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py:14-16: Do not pass compression level 3 to no-zstd builds
set_test_params() unconditionally passes -blockcompression=3, but AppInitParameterInteraction() rejects every nonzero compression level in builds without zstd before run_test() reaches its is_zstd_compiled() check. The pruning test therefore fails at node startup in every supported --without-zstd configuration instead of exercising pruning there.
- [BLOCKING] test/functional/feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py:1: Restore the functional test executable permission
The PR changes this script from mode 100755 to 100644 while retaining its shebang. lint-files.py requires every file with a first-line shebang to have executable permission, so the lint job fails on this mode change.

In `test/functional/test_framework/test_framework.py`:
- [BLOCKING] test/functional/test_framework/test_framework.py:1164-1166: Handle an absent ENABLE_ZSTD configuration entry
When zstd is disabled, test/config.ini.in comments out ENABLE_ZSTD=true, so the option is absent rather than set to false. getboolean("ENABLE_ZSTD") consequently raises NoOptionError when the functional test calls is_zstd_compiled(), even after its startup arguments are made conditional. Use a false fallback for builds whose generated configuration omits the option.

In `src/util/zstd.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/util/zstd.cpp:28-37: Avoid cppcheck known-condition warnings in zstd helpers
The Dash cppcheck lint configuration analyzes this translation unit without ENABLE_ZSTD. It can therefore prove that ZstdAvailable() is always false and reports knownConditionTrueFalse diagnostics for the runtime branches in DefaultZstdLevel() and ZstdLevel(). These warnings are not suppressed, and the supplied lint check fails. Use preprocessor branches so the no-zstd analysis has only the no-zstd implementation while preserving the runtime behavior in zstd builds.

In `configure.ac`:
- [SUGGESTION] configure.ac:152-156: Correct the zstd help text to describe block and undo files
The --without-zstd help text says zstd compresses block files and masternode lists, but this PR adds compression only for block and undo records. The same inaccurate wording appears in both corresponding sections of doc/build-unix.md. Update all three occurrences so the build documentation matches the implementation.

In `src/validation.cpp`:
- [SUGGESTION] src/validation.cpp:5711-5715: Make skipped compressed blocks visible during no-zstd reindex
During -reindex, decompression failures are logged only through BCLog::REINDEX. That category may be disabled, so a no-zstd build can silently skip compressed records and finish reindex while relying on peers to redownload the missing blocks. The PR documents reindex as the recovery path and says unreadable compressed records are reported; emit a normal-level message when zstd support is unavailable while retaining the existing debug-category message for other decompression failures.
