Abort before deleting transactions whose writes fail
If WriteTx() returns false while persisting a purely watch-only transaction (for example, because of an SQLite I/O or database failure), the result is ignored, the txid is still queued for ZapSelectTx() from the main wallet, and the child already has the current best-block locator so reload will not recover it by rescanning. The prior AddToWallet() path aborted on its checked WriteTx(), so this failure must likewise stop migration before the source record is deleted.

Upstream bitcoin#28609 (4814e40) also ignores the result of watchonly_batch->WriteTx(...) in ApplyMigrationData, so this line matches upstream exactly. Adding error handling would change upstream behaviour, not fix a backport error.

Defer retaining the main wallet until all reloads succeed
When the main reload succeeds but a subsequent watch-only or solvables reload fails, this copy leaves res.wallet owning the main wallet while cleanup only moves local_wallet into created_wallets. After RemoveWallet() drops the context copy, UnloadWallet() waits for the last shared pointer, but res.wallet cannot be destroyed until this function returns, so migratewallet hangs before removing the partial wallets or restoring the backup; assign this result only after every reload succeeds, or clear it before cleanup.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This is the same res.wallet = local_wallet assignment that upstream bitcoin#28609 makes after reload_wallet(local_wallet), so the backport matches upstream. Changing when the main wallet is kept would restructure upstream code.

Remove chainless child wallets from startup settings on failure
When migration fails after creating a chainless child—for example, watch-only creation succeeds and a pre-existing _solvables directory makes the next creation fail—DoMigration() has already persisted that child with load_on_startup=true at lines 5059/5096. This branch only resets the pointer, unlike the prior loaded-wallet cleanup that called RemoveWallet(..., false), so the directory is deleted but settings.json keeps naming a nonexistent wallet and every later startup warns and skips it; remove the setting explicitly or defer adding it until the whole migration succeeds.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Upstream bitcoin#28609 also calls UpdateWalletSetting(load_on_startup=true) for the chainless watchonly and solvables wallets in DoMigration, and its failure cleanup only resets those pointers. The backport matches upstream.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied findings against head 3cf2eac. Both prerequisite findings concern the same explicitly documented exclusion; neither establishes an actionable backport defect. Validation was static only: git diff --check passed, while the supplied CI snapshot shows a failed dependency-build job and queued source builds, so build/test validation remains incomplete.

Allow migration without a best-block record
When migratewallet is called by name for an unloaded legacy wallet produced by dash-wallet -legacy (and therefore never attached to a chain), the database legitimately has no best-block record, so ReadBestBlock() returns false and this unconditional check rolls the migration back. This also occurs even for a private-key-only wallet where no watch-only or solvables child needs the locator; gate the read on creating such a child or otherwise tolerate the missing record so the supported unloaded-wallet flow can migrate it.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

The unconditional ReadBestBlock() check matches upstream bitcoin commit 9332c7e (from bitcoin#28868) line for line, including the error message; it was folded into this bitcoin#28609 commit as its message says. Changing when migration requires a best-block record would change upstream's design, so the backport keeps upstream's behaviour.

Agreed, dropping bitcoin#28609 from this batch. Dash only has part of bitcoin#28868 (#7793), so the migration code in wallet.cpp has drifted from upstream and this backport can't match upstream cleanly. It can come back once the rest of bitcoin#28868 and anything else it depends on are backported. Dropping bitcoin#28609 from this branch; it is being rewritten without it.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Reviewed the complete 46-file diff at the exact head and found no actionable Dash-specific correctness or merge-resolution defect. One non-blocking documentation issue remains: the advertised upstream coverage should identify the declared inactive-HD test omission and correct its explanation of Dash's sethdseed support. Static validation included upstream-source comparisons and git diff --check; current CI has passing lint, formatting, and TSan compilation, while TSan tests and other platform builds remain pending.

In `test/functional/test_framework/test_node.py`:
- [SUGGESTION] test/functional/test_framework/test_node.py:492-494: Report the declared inactive-HD test prerequisite gap
The wallets_path property is correct, but the PR description's statement that every upstream hunk is present needs an explicit exception. Bitcoin #27884 also removes the os import and converts both keymeta_test directory constructions in wallet_inactive_hdchains.py to wallets_path. That test was introduced by c4d76c6faa3 in bitcoin#23304 and is absent from both the Dash base and this head. Commit 9d6e968db2 explicitly excludes it, so this is a declared, non-blocking omission—not a runtime dependency failure or a request to import the missing feature. Document that exception in the PR description and correct the commit's rationale that Dash has no sethdseed: src/wallet/rpc/wallet.cpp implements the RPC, but rejects replacing an existing HD seed, as wallet_hd.py also documents and checks.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (4)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Abort before deleting transactions whose writes fail — Outside the upstream-faithful backport scope: the authoritative bitcoin#28609 source at 4814e40 also ignores watchonly_batch->WriteTx() before queuing source transactions for removal and flushing the batch. The locator propagation is separately carried from the explicitly identified upstream commit 9332c7e. This is not a Dash merge-resolution defect, and adding error handling here would change the upstream behavior being backported.
- Follow-up: Consider creating a separate issue or author/maintainer-requested PR for this.
- Defer retaining the main wallet until all reloads succeed — Outside the upstream-faithful backport scope: bitcoin#28609 at 4814e40 assigns res.wallet = local_wallet immediately after the main reload, then attempts child reloads and uses the same created_wallets/UnloadWallet failure cleanup without resetting res.wallet. Inspection confirms the ownership concern is inherited upstream behavior, not a Dash-specific adaptation.
- Follow-up: Consider creating a separate issue or author/maintainer-requested PR for this.
- Remove chainless child wallets from startup settings on failure — Outside the upstream-faithful backport scope: bitcoin#28609 at 4814e40 calls UpdateWalletSetting(load_on_startup=true) when creating each chainless child and only resets chainless wallet pointers during failed-migration cleanup. Dash preserves that upstream implementation; requesting startup-setting changes would expand this backport into an upstream behavior fix.
- Follow-up: Consider creating a separate issue or author/maintainer-requested PR for this.
- Allow migration without a best-block record — Outside the upstream-faithful backport scope: upstream commit 9332c7e adds the same unconditional ReadBestBlock() check and failure return before the transaction loop, even when neither child wallet exists. HEAD explicitly includes that previously deferred bitcoin#28868 commit alongside bitcoin#28609. The reported missing-record behavior is therefore not a Dash merge-resolution defect.
- Follow-up: Consider creating a separate issue or author/maintainer-requested PR for this.

No code change is needed: wallet_inactive_hdchains.py comes from bitcoin#23304, which Dash doesn't have, and commit 9d6e968 already lists it as intentionally omitted. You're right about the wording, though: Dash does have sethdseed (src/wallet/rpc/wallet.cpp) but refuses to replace an existing seed and has no inactive-HD-chain support. The commit message's 'no sethdseed' should say that instead, and the PR description should note the same exception; both are commit/PR text, not file changes, so I couldn't make them here.

Agreed—the proposed commit-message correction and explicit PR-description exception would resolve this suggestion; no repository file change or inactive-HD-chain backport is needed. I checked the IsHDEnabled() rejection and the existing wallet_hd.py check, which support your corrected wording. This remains only a non-blocking text correction until those edits are applied.
The finding stands on this commit until that change is pushed; the push gets a full review.

27884:
probably missing chunks for dash specific code, consider including some of them:
- test/functional/wallet_backup.py:132 in the Dash-only restore_corrupt_bdb_wallet: os.path.join(node.datadir, self.chain, 'wallets', wallet_name) should be
os.path.join(node.wallets_path, wallet_name). The scripted diff's first regex matches it literally. - test/functional/wallet_backup.py:144 in the Dash-only restore_preserves_existing_directory: wallet_dir = os.path.join(node.datadir, self.chain, 'wallets') should be
node.wallets_path. - test/functional/wallet_upgradetohd.py:43 (Dash-only test): os.path.join(node.datadir, self.chain, ...) should be os.path.join(node.chain_path, ...). The scripted diff's git grep -l
'.datadir, self.chain,' would have selected this file.
-[this one covered already by 28070 in this PR] test/functional/mempool_compatibility.py:41 (Dash-only v18.2.2 cache cleanup): shutil.rmtree(os.path.join(self.nodes[0].datadir, self.chain)) should be
shutil.rmtree(self.nodes[0].chain_path). The commit touched this file but converted only the two upstream lines. - test/functional/wallet_migration.py:554 in Dash-only test_wallet_name_with_slashes: os.path.join(self.nodes[0].datadir, "regtest", "wallets", "nested", "subdir_wallet") is exactly
the hardcoded-"regtest" pattern upstream's manual commit removed from this same file. Should be self.nodes[0].wallets_path / "nested" / "subdir_wallet". The commit message cites
this function as the reason to keep import os; the remaining os.path.dirname/abspath/basename there still justify that. - test/functional/rpc_external_queue.py:37 (Dash-only): os.path.join(self.options.tmpdir+"/node0", "dash.conf") is the "hardcoded node dir name" case from the PR description. Should
be self.nodes[0].bitcoinconf (already exists on TestNode) or self.nodes[0].datadir_path / "dash.conf".

Converted the Dash-only call sites: wallet_backup.py (restore_corrupt_bdb_wallet, restore_preserves_existing_directory) now uses node.wallets_path, wallet_upgradetohd.py uses node.chain_path, and wallet_migration.py's test_wallet_name_with_slashes uses wallets_path instead of hardcoding "regtest". I skipped mempool_compatibility.py because it has no remaining datadir/self.chain rmtree (only the two chain_path lines are there). I skipped rpc_external_queue.py because that path is built in setup_chain(), before setup_network() creates self.nodes, so bitcoinconf/datadir_path don't exist yet. (changes landed in bitcoin#27884, bitcoin#28609)

these 2 still not applied:
- test/functional/wallet_migration.py:554 in test_wallet_name_with_slashes: the hardcoded os.path.join(self.nodes[0].datadir, "regtest", "wallets", "nested", "subdir_wallet") is
untouched. The commit converts the three upstream "regtest" lines in this file but not this Dash-only one. Should be self.nodes[0].wallets_path / "nested" / "subdir_wallet". - test/functional/rpc_external_queue.py:37: os.path.join(self.options.tmpdir+"/node0", "dash.conf") is untouched and the file is not in the commit. Should be
self.nodes[0].bitcoinconf.

wallet_migration.py:554 now uses self.nodes[0].wallets_path / "nested" / "subdir_wallet", matching how bitcoin#27884 converted the other "regtest" lines in that file. I did not change rpc_external_queue.py: it is a Dash-only file that upstream never touched, and the line is in setup_chain(), which runs before setup_nodes()/add_nodes(), so self.nodes is still empty there and self.nodes[0].bitcoinconf would raise IndexError. the original wallet consistently with failures from `DoMigration` and wallet
reloads.
- Around line 5249-5297: Handle filesystem errors in the failed-migration
rollback around backup staging and wallet-directory cleanup: report staging
failures before any source directory is removed, and prevent `fs::remove_all`
failures from escaping before `RestoreWallet` is attempted. Preserve the staged
backup for recovery if restoration cannot complete.

flow, remove the startup setting for each wallet before resetting it. Use the

if removal fails, append the cleanup error while preserving the wallet reset and
existing cleanup behavior.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Static verification of the complete diff at 4c719b3 found no blocking correctness or Dash-specific integration issues. One documentation suggestion remains valid: the commit misstates Dash's sethdseed support, and the PR's completeness claim omits an intentional test-edit exclusion. Current CI shows passing builds, lint, and standard Linux, SQLite, and no-wallet tests; ASan, TSan, and multiprocess tests remain pending.

In `test/functional/test_framework/test_node.py`:
- [SUGGESTION] test/functional/test_framework/test_node.py:492-494: Report the declared inactive-HD test prerequisite gap
(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/dash/pull/7907#discussion_r4305920338)
The requested correction belongs in commit/PR text, not this property. Replacement commit 61144e66a8 still explains the wallet_inactive_hdchains.py omission by saying Dash has "no sethdseed", but src/wallet/rpc/wallet.cpp implements and registers that RPC and rejects replacing an existing seed; wallet_hd.py explicitly checks this restriction. Upstream bitcoin#27884 also removes that test's os import and converts its two keymeta_test paths, so the live PR description's "every upstream hunk present" claim needs an explicit exception. During branch finalization, correct the commit rationale to describe the unsupported seed replacement/inactive-HD-chain behavior and qualify the PR's coverage statement. The omission is explicitly declared and acknowledged in your reply, so this remains a non-blocking documentation correction, not a request to import the missing feature or change Python code.
