Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete change range at c7a22be and found no actionable in-scope defects. The evo prune lock conservatively covers the credit-pool and quorum-member historical reads, includes the supported reorg margin, and uses the existing automatic/manual pruning mechanism; the tests, build registration, and release notes are consistent with the implementation. Verification was static only: the supplied CI snapshot from 2026-10-14T04:21:58Z shows lint passing, while platform build checks and several other checks remain queued.

Pruning keeps the last MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP blocks, but after V20 block validation also reads older blocks from disk. Rebuilding the credit pool on a cold cache reads every block back to the last disk snapshot and the block CreditPoolPeriodBlocks before each of them, and building rotated quorum members reads the work blocks of the previous cycles. When pruning had deleted one of them, a pruned node rejected a valid block. Set an "evo" prune lock at a height derived from the consensus params, for the tip MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP blocks below the current one, so that the blocks connected after a reorg are covered too. Automatic and manual pruning both honour it. Existing functional tests that prune short regtest chains now mine more blocks first, since the blocks they pruned are kept. Handle datadirs pruned before the lock existed
When this binary is first started on a mainnet datadir that the previous release manually pruned past the newly computed lock, the protected blocks are already gone; this call only prevents subsequent deletion. Restart clears the credit-pool cache, so the first cold GetCreditPool() reconstruction reads a block 576 heights back that old pruning was allowed to remove, and a subsequent valid block is classified invalid with failed-getcbforblock-read. Detect this state at startup and either refill the required range or stop with a recovery error before normal validation; otherwise the users this fix targets can still stop following the chain immediately after upgrading.

Added a startup check in 33ad24f.
Once the chainstate is loaded, a pruned node finds the lowest block that building the credit pools reads. It walks back from the tip the same way GetCreditPool() does on a cold cache, down to the last credit pool snapshot on disk or to V20 activation, and takes the block CreditPoolPeriodBlocks() before each block on the way. Every block from there up to the tip is read while the next CreditPoolPeriodBlocks() blocks connect, so the node checks BLOCK_HAVE_DATA for all of them (CCreditPoolManager::FindMissingBlockData()). If one was pruned, init fails with "Block N, which is needed to validate new blocks, has been pruned. You need to rebuild the database using -reindex. This will redownload the entire blockchain". It goes through the same ChainstateLoadStatus::FAILURE path as the existing "go back to unpruned mode" error, so the GUI offers to rebuild.
It doesn't require the whole lock range. The rest of the range is margin, for reorgs and for reads that don't happen on every restart, so requiring all of it would also refuse datadirs whose next blocks validate fine. The check is skipped for unpruned nodes, chains below V20, -reindex and snapshot chainstates.
Tests:
feature_pruning_evo.pyhas a new case. It prunes past these blocks with the hidden, debug-only-evoprunelock=0, checks the init error, then restarts with-reindexand syncs back to the tip.- The earlier cases restart nodes pruned as far as the lock allows, and those start normally.
- A new unit test covers
FindMissingBlockData()at both ends of the range, for a tip that has its own snapshot, before the first snapshot and before V20.
The release notes are updated.

Check LLMQ history before accepting a pruned datadir
When upgrading a mainnet/testnet/devnet datadir manually pruned by an older release, this guard can pass even though the first upcoming rotated-quorum commitment needs missing data, because it only invokes the credit-pool check. Fresh evidence in this revision is that FindMissingBlockData(ActiveTip()) verifies no LLMQ work blocks: for an LLMQ_60_75 cycle base S (also a 576-block credit snapshot), a restart at S+41 can check only back to S-575, while a commitment at S+42 reconstructs the previous three quarters and calls GetNonNullCoinbaseChainlock() on the work block at S-872. If that block contained a non-null ChainLock and was pruned, the modifier falls back to the block hash and the node computes the wrong members and rejects the valid commitment, so startup must also reject missing LLMQ history (or the complete evo lock range) with the reindex error.

Done in 44bbc3e. The startup check now covers the whole range that the evo prune lock keeps for the tip, not only the blocks the credit pool reads.
FindMissingEvoBlockData() in src/validation.cpp checks every block from GetEvoPruneLockHeightForTip() up to the tip. The lock in FlushStateToDisk() uses the same function, so the two always cover the same range. If one of these blocks is missing, init fails with the same -reindex error as before. The credit pool walk that the check used before is removed.
Tests:
evo_prune_find_missing_block_datauses mainnet params with the tip at anLLMQ_60_75cycle base + 40:- a missing work block at base − 872, older than the blocks the credit pool reads for the next block, is reported;
- missing blocks at both ends of the range are reported;
- a missing block just below the range is not.
evo_prune_find_missing_block_data_before_v20covers the V20 floor.feature_pruning_evo.pynow prunes a node into the lock range, below the blocks the credit pool reads for the next blocks. It checks that the node refuses to start with the-reindexerror, and that a-reindexrestart syncs back to the tip. The earlier cases restart nodes pruned as far as the lock allows, and those still start.
The release notes now say a pruned node refuses to start if blocks within that range were already pruned.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied findings against head 44bbc3e. The prune lock preserves validation history, but the startup check applies a fresh rollback margin to an already-rewound tip and can reject a datadir pruned safely by this revision. This was a static review; no builds or tests were run, and the supplied CI snapshot still has checks queued.

In `src/validation.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/validation.cpp:5205-5207: Allow restart after a supported tip rewind
The startup scan includes a fresh MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP rollback margin relative to the loaded tip, even when a rewind has already consumed the margin preserved during pruning. In the existing functional test's height-1439 scenario, pruning reaches height 464. Invalidate block 1152, then stop and restart before reconsidering it: shutdown persists tip 1151, and this check scans back to 1151 − (288 + 676) = 187, finds missing block 464, and initialization demands a full reindex. The retained history is sufficient to reconnect: even the conservative validation-only bound is 1151 − 676 = 475, while rebuilding the credit pool from the height-576 snapshot reads from height 477 onward. The startup failure occurs before RPC becomes available, preventing reconsiderblock from restoring the chain. Distinguish missing validation history from an already-consumed rollback margin, preserve the LLMQ history checks, and extend the existing reorg scenario to restart at the fork point before reconsidering.

Confirmed and fixed in 1bd42f8.
I reproduced it with the test's reorg scenario. After invalidateblock on block 1152, the node restarted at the fork point (1151) and refused to start because block 401 had been pruned. Validating 1152 only reads back to 475. A restart also reconsiders invalid blocks ahead of the tip, so the restart alone would have reconnected them.
FindMissingEvoBlockData() now checks only the blocks that validating the next blocks reads, from GetEvoPruneLockHeight() for the tip upward. The prune lock still calls the same function, MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP blocks below the tip (GetEvoPruneLockHeightForTip()). So it keeps all of these blocks, plus the reorg margin below them. Startup no longer requires that margin. LLMQ history stays covered because the depth is unchanged.
Tests:
-
In
feature_pruning_evo.py, the reorg scenario now restarts the pruned node at the fork point beforereconsiderblock. The test checks that:- the node loads its chain at block 1151 and reconsiders the blocks ahead of it;
- it reconnects them up to the miner's tip;
- the blocks the lock would keep at the fork point for a further reorg were pruned.
With 44bbc3e, that restart fails with the
-reindexerror; with 1bd42f8 the test passes. -
evo_prune_find_missing_block_datareports missing blocks at both ends of the checked range, including theLLMQ_60_75work block. It does not report the block just below the range, or the blocks the lock keeps below them for a reorg.
The release notes and the PR description now say that a pruned node refuses to start if blocks it needs to validate the next blocks were already pruned.

Resolved (re-reviewed at 8d701e40): Your change in 1bd42f8 makes startup use GetEvoPruneLockHeight() at the loaded tip, while pruning still reserves MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP through GetEvoPruneLockHeightForTip(), so the consumed rollback margin no longer prevents startup and the LLMQ validation depth remains covered. The functional scenario now explicitly restarts at height 1151 before reconsidering the blocks, and the unit checks distinguish required validation history from the extra rollback margin.

Advertise only full reindex for missing block data
When a pruned pre-lock datadir reaches this branch, ChainstateLoadStatus::FAILURE is handled by AppInitMain with the generic stderr advice to restart with either -reindex or -reindex-chainstate. The latter cannot restore deleted block files and is explicitly rejected by the prune-mode parameter check in init.cpp with Prune mode is incompatible with -reindex-chainstate. Use full -reindex instead, so following the final recovery instruction merely produces another failed startup. Return a status/recovery message that preserves the GUI reindex flow but advertises only full -reindex for this case.

Valid, fixed in 8d701e4.
I reproduced it on 1bd42f8. When the startup check fails, dashd prints the error and then "Please restart with -reindex or -reindex-chainstate to recover.". Following the second option fails right away with "Prune mode is incompatible with -reindex-chainstate. Use full -reindex instead.". In the GUI, the question dialog shows the error and "Do you want to rebuild the block database now?". Choosing rebuild runs a full reindex, so that path was already correct; only the non-interactive hint (stderr and debug.log) was wrong.
Upstream has already fixed this in bitcoin#35849, which Dash hasn't backported yet. I took the same one-line change in AppInitMain: the hint is now "Please restart with -reindex to recover." whenever -prune is set, the same condition that rejects -reindex-chainstate. The status stays ChainstateLoadStatus::FAILURE, so the GUI rebuild prompt doesn't change. Unpruned nodes keep the existing hint.
Tests: feature_pruning_evo.py now expects the -reindex-only hint in the startup refusal case. evo_prune_tests, feature_pruning_evo.py, rpc_blockchain.py --v1transport (generic hint on an unpruned node) and feature_init.py pass. The release notes already say that such a node asks to restart with -reindex.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the complete PR diff at 8d701e4, including pruning, validation-history reads, startup recovery, and test adaptations; no remaining blocking code defects were identified, and the prior supported-tip-rewind finding is fixed. One non-blocking commit-history suggestion remains after deduplication. Verification was static: the supplied CI snapshot shows lint passing, but platform cache/build/test checks and other checks remain queued, so CI runtime validation is not yet confirmed.

A datadir pruned before the evo prune lock existed, for example by an earlier release, may already be missing blocks that the credit pool and quorum member code read back from disk while the next blocks connect, so these blocks would fail to validate. Once the chainstate is loaded, check that every block from GetEvoPruneLockHeight() for the tip up to the tip is still on disk, and otherwise fail with an error asking to restart with -reindex, the same way as for other pruned datadirs that can't be used. Unpruned nodes, snapshot chainstates and an empty coins view are skipped. The lock keeps these blocks too, since it uses the same function for the tip MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP blocks lower (GetEvoPruneLockHeightForTip()). The check leaves out the blocks that the lock keeps below them for a reorg: a node that rewound its tip, e.g. with invalidateblock, may have used them up and can still connect the next blocks. When loading the chainstate fails on a pruned node, suggest only -reindex, since prune mode rejects -reindex-chainstate. This is the same line as bitcoin#35849. Add the debug-only -evoprunelock option to disable the lock, which the functional test uses to get a datadir pruned without these blocks. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Restart a manually pruned node so that its credit pool cache is cold, then check that it reconnects the blocks after a reorg of MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP blocks, also when it restarts at the fork point, and accepts the next block at a credit pool snapshot height. Then prune blocks that validating the next blocks reads with -evoprunelock=0, check that the node refuses to start and asks to restart with -reindex, and that a restart with -reindex syncs back to the tip. Use only three cycles for the rotated quorum depth
When upgrading a mainnet/testnet/devnet datadir whose old manual pruning stopped, for example, about 1,500 blocks behind the tip, this six-cycle bound makes FindMissingEvoBlockData() scan 1,786 blocks back and refuse startup with a full-reindex error even though every block whose data is required for upcoming validation is present. ComputeQuorumMembersByQuarterRotation() has exactly three PreviousQuorumQuarters, and GetQuorumQuarterMembersBySnapshot() reconstructs each directly from that cycle's persisted snapshot and work block; it does not recursively read the three cycles used to create that snapshot. The rotated bound is therefore 3 * dkgInterval + dkgMiningWindowEnd + WORK_DIFF_DEPTH (922 for LLMQ_60_75), below the 1,152-block credit-pool bound; using six both causes the false recovery failure and unnecessarily prevents pruning roughly 634 additional blocks.

Thanks. I checked this against the code and am keeping six cycles, with no code change.
You're right that building the members of cycle H reads only the work blocks of H, H−C, H−2C and H−3C, plus the stored snapshots of H−C, H−2C and H−3C, and doesn't recurse. But those snapshots aren't write-once:
GetAllQuorumMembers()builds a cycle again on every cache miss, withpredicting=false(src/llmq/utils.cpp:707). That passesstoreSnapshot=truetoBuildNewQuorumQuarterMembers()(utils.cpp:513), which stores the cycle's snapshot again (utils.cpp:462).StoreSnapshotForBlock()is a plain write (src/llmq/snapshot.cpp:327).- The members cache is held only in memory. After a restart, the members of H−C, H−2C and H−3C are built again as soon as those quorums are used.
- Building H−3C again reads the work blocks back to H−6C, through the previous-cycle modifiers (utils.cpp:204).
The commitments of H are checked against the snapshots of H−C, H−2C and H−3C. Each rebuild of those snapshots must read the same blocks they were first built from. That gives 6 × dkgInterval + dkgMiningWindowEnd + WORK_DIFF_DEPTH, as the comment on GetEvoPruneLockHeight() says.
Nothing else adds depth:
- A missing previous snapshot is never rebuilt from older work blocks.
- A cycle's snapshot is stored when its base block connects (src/llmq/blockprocessor.cpp:223), before anything reads it.
- All quorum indexes of a cycle share its work block (
cycleBase − WORK_DIFF_DEPTH) and its mining window (cycleBase + dkgMiningWindowStarttocycleBase + dkgMiningWindowEnd).
So refusing to start on a datadir that lacks those blocks is intended. On mainnet, testnet and devnet this keeps 634 more blocks than the credit pool alone needs. On regtest it keeps none.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Independently reviewed the complete diff at 3337a35 and the surrounding pruning, startup, credit-pool, and quorum-snapshot paths; no actionable in-scope defects remain. Both prior findings are fixed, and the six-cycle rotated-quorum retention bound accounts for older snapshots being rebuilt and overwritten after cache misses. This was static verification only: the supplied CI snapshot shows lint passing, while build checks and several other checks remain queued or pending.

Pruning keeps at least the last
MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEP(288) blocks on disk. Since V20, block validation also reads older blocks from disk, and pruning can delete them. A pruned node can then fail to validate a valid block:CCreditPoolManagerwrites the pool to disk everyDISK_SNAPSHOT_PERIOD(576) blocks; the snapshot of a block is written once the next block connects. When the pool of the previous block is not cached, for example after a restart,GetCreditPool()walks back to the last disk snapshot, andConstructCreditPool()reads every block on the way plus the blockCreditPoolPeriodBlocks()before each of them (576 on mainnet, testnet and devnet; 100 on regtest). On mainnet that reaches up to 1152 blocks below the block being connected. If one of these blocks was pruned,ProcessSpecialTxsInBlock()fails withfailed-getcbforblock-read,ConnectBlock()marks the block invalid (failed-procspectxsinblock) and the node stops following the chain.GetHashModifierFromWorkBlock()→GetNonNullCoinbaseChainlock(), which reads the block from disk). Rotated quorums also use the members of the three previous cycles through a quorum snapshot stored for each cycle. Building the members of a cycle reads the work blocks of that cycle and of the three cycles before it, and members that are not cached, for example after a restart, are built and their snapshot stored again. ForLLMQ_60_75this needs blocks up to 6 × 288 + 50 + 8 = 1786 blocks below the block that carries the last commitment of a cycle. If a work block was pruned,GetNonNullCoinbaseChainlock()returns nothing, the modifier falls back to the block hash, and the pruned node computes different members than the rest of the network, so it can reject a valid commitment. The blocks connected after a reorg read relative to the fork point, so a reorg of up to
MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks needs older blocks still. At current mainnet block sizes an automatic
-prunetarget holds far more blocks than any of these, so this mostly affects manual pruning (pruneblockchain,-prune=1).What was done?
GetEvoPruneLockHeight()(src/evo/specialtxman.cpp) returns the lowest height that these code paths can read while connecting the blocks after a given tip. The depth is derived from the consensus params: the larger ofDISK_SNAPSHOT_PERIOD + CreditPoolPeriodBlocks()and, for every LLMQ type,(useRotation ? 6 : 0) * dkgInterval + dkgMiningWindowEnd + WORK_DIFF_DEPTH. That is 1786 blocks on mainnet, testnet and devnet (LLMQ_60_75) and 676 on regtest (credit pool). Nothing before the credit pool window of the V20 activation block is read, so the height doesn't go belowV20Height - CreditPoolPeriodBlocks().Chainstate::FlushStateToDisk()sets anevoprune lock at that height for the tipMIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks below the current one, so that the blocks connected after a reorg that pruning supports can read what they need too. It does so right before it applies the prune locks, through the existingBlockManager::UpdatePruneLock()mechanism that the indexes use. Automatic pruning, pruneblockchainand the prune at startup all honour it, and-debug=prunelogsevo limited pruning to height …as it does for the indexes.GetEvoPruneLockHeight()for its tip up to the tip, are still on disk (FindMissingEvoBlockData()insrc/validation.cpp). The lock uses the same function for the tipMIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks lower (GetEvoPruneLockHeightForTip()), so it keeps these blocks too. The check leaves out the blocks that the lock keeps below them for a reorg: a node that rewound its tip, e.g. withinvalidateblock, may have used them up and can still connect the next blocks. If one of the checked blocks was pruned, for example by an earlier release, init fails with "Block N, which is needed to validate new blocks, has been pruned. You need to rebuild the database using -reindex. …". This uses the sameChainstateLoadStatus::FAILUREpath as the existing "go back to unpruned mode" error, so the GUI offers to rebuild. Unpruned nodes, chains below the lock's V20 floor,-reindexand snapshot chainstates are not affected. A node pruned with the lock never lacks these blocks, also after rewinding its tip by up toMIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks, so it always passes.-reindex("Please restart with -reindex to recover."), since prune mode rejects-reindex-chainstate. This is the same one-line change as init: don't suggest -reindex-chainstate for recovery on a pruned node bitcoin/bitcoin#35849. The GUI's rebuild prompt is unchanged.-evoprunelock=0turns the lock off. The functional test uses it to get a datadir pruned without these blocks.CCreditPoolManager::DISK_SNAPSHOT_PERIODis now public so that the depth can use it.feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py(800 → 1400),rpc_rawtransaction.py(600 → 1200),rpc_getblockfrompeer.py(900 → 1200) andinterface_usdt_utxocache.py(450 → 1200).doc/release-notes-7882.md.A prune lock covers automatic and manual pruning with the mechanism that already exists for this, without new database entries or a consensus change. Keeping the data that is read in evodb instead would let nodes prune these blocks, but needs a new database format and a migration.
Relation to #7861
#7861 raises the number of blocks pruning keeps to 1152 on mainnet, testnet and devnet. That alone does not fix what this PR fixes:
LLMQ_60_75cycle reads work blocks up to 1786 blocks below the tip. With 1152 kept, pruning can still delete them, and the node silently computes different members.MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPmore blocks.-reindexerror instead of rejecting a valid block later. The two PRs don't conflict. A higher minimum can still sit under this lock. Whichever PR merges second should replace
MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPin the lock's reorg margin withMinBlocksToKeep().How Has This Been Tested?
New functional test
feature_pruning_evo.py. A-prune=1 -fastprunenode follows a regtest chain with V20 active from height 150, prunes as far aspruneblockchainallows and restarts, so that its credit pool cache is cold. Then:MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks withinvalidateblock, restarts at the fork point and reconnects them withreconsiderblock(the restart already reconsiders the invalid blocks ahead of the tip). The fork point, block 1151, is one block before a credit pool snapshot height. The node has to start there, although the blocks the lock would keep there for a further reorg are pruned, and reconnect all of them. Both steps check the
evoprune lock height in the debug log, and the restarts show that a node pruned as far as the lock allows starts normally.-evoprunelock=0the node prunes up toMIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPblocks below its tip: into the blocks that validating the next blocks reads, below the ones that building the credit pool reads. Restarting it fails with the-reindexerror, which names the last pruned block. A restart with-reindexthen syncs back to the tip.ReadBlockFromDiskfails while the credit pool is rebuilt, and block 1152 is rejected withfailed-getcbforblock-read/failed-procspectxsinblock.New unit tests
evo_prune_tests:FindMissingEvoBlockData()on mainnet params: a missing work block of a rotatedLLMQ_60_75cycle, older than the blocks the credit pool reads for the next block, is reported, and so are blocks at both ends of the range, but not the block just below it or the blocks that the lock keeps below them for a reorg; on regtest, nothing below the V20 floor is checked. No functional test covers the quorum member path, because the regtest LLMQ types read at most 172 blocks back, which
MIN_BLOCKS_TO_KEEPalready keeps. The unit tests check its depth for every rotated LLMQ type.Existing tests run with this PR, all passing:
feature_remove_pruned_files_on_startup.py,rpc_rawtransaction.py --legacy-wallet,rpc_getblockfrompeer.py,rpc_blockchain.py --v1transport,wallet_import_rescan.py --legacy-wallet,p2p_node_network_limited.py --v1transport,p2p_dos_header_tree.py,wallet_crosschain.py,feature_index_prune.py,feature_fastprune.py,wallet_pruning.py --legacy-wallet,feature_reindex.py,feature_init.py,feature_llmq_rotation.py,feature_asset_locks.py;evo_*,llmq_*,blockmanager_tests,validation_*andblock_reward_reallocation_tests.interface_usdt_utxocache.pywas skipped here because it needs BPF.feature_pruning.pyfails at "Test it's not possible to rescan beyond pruned data" on develop, with and without this PR.test_rescan_blockchain()restarts node 0 withoutDEPLOYMENT_ARGS, so the masternode list repair at startup looks for snapshots of a DIP3 activation height that this chain never had and shuts the node down. With that restart givenDEPLOYMENT_ARGSlocally, the whole test passes with this PR. That test fix is not part of this PR.Environment: Ubuntu 26.04 x86_64, autotools build against depends.
Breaking Changes
From V20 on, pruned nodes keep more blocks: at least the last 2074 on mainnet, testnet and devnet (instead of 288), and the last 964 on regtest. At current mainnet block sizes that is far below the minimum
-prunetarget, so automatic pruning mostly behaves as before.pruneblockchainreturns a lower height than before when the requested height is inside that range. This doesn't bring back blocks that a node has already pruned. A pruned node that is missing blocks it needs to validate the next blocks, for example because an earlier release pruned them, now refuses to start and asks to restart with-reindex. A node that has already rejected a block because of them also needs-reindex.Checklist:
