Issue being fixed or feature implemented

CLAUDE.md lists conventions that nothing enforced, so a PR could break them and stay green. One had already slipped through: RadioButtonRow(style: .checkbox) asked for imagesets named icon_checkbox_square[_checked]. Those are the PNG file names inside checkbox-checkmark-*.imageset, not imageset names, so the checkbox draws nothing. dashwallet-ios uses this style in the merchant filters.

What was done?

  • New CI job "Conventions: assets, colors, strings" (ubuntu, no Xcode, about a second). It runs .github/scripts/conventions.sh, which checks:

    1. DashIcon raw values ↔ *.imageset: missing, orphaned, or the same name in two folders (the catalog is flat).
    2. dashAsset("…") tokens ↔ *.colorset: missing or orphaned.
    3. Literal asset names (Image("…", bundle:), .custom("…", bundle:), Color("…", bundle:), UIImage(named:in:), Label(…, image:), …) exist, and are looked up in the package bundle. The check also catches a lookup with no bundle, or with .main / nil.
    4. Every set has a valid Contents.json that names at least one image or color, and every image it lists exists. No catalog folder provides a namespace.
    5. No colors built from components (Color(red:), .init(white:), .sRGB, hex, #colorLiteral) outside Color+DashUI.swift.
    6. NSLocalizedString, String(localized:) and AttributedString(localized:) pass the package bundle.
    7. No @available, #available or #unavailable for an iOS/macOS version at or below the Package.swift floor. Newer versions are allowed.

Calls are parsed with their arguments: labels, nesting, several lines, and interpolated code. String contents and // comments are ignored. The script header lists what is out of reach, for example names passed through a variable, Text("…") keys, and block comments.

  • .github/scripts/tests/conventions-test.sh runs in the same job. It breaks a copy of the tree once per rule using its own fixtures, without editing components, and asserts file:line: message for each violation. It also checks the shapes that must pass. shellcheck in the lint job now covers tests/ as well.

  • Fixes for the two violations on master:

    • RadioButtonRow now draws DashIcon.Checkbox.checkmarkChecked / .checkmarkUnchecked.
    • ThumbView's Color(red: 0.1, green: 0.13, blue: 0.15) becomes Color.dash.switchThumbShadow, backed by Colors/Switch/SwitchThumbShadow.colorset with the same sRGB value, so the look does not change.
  • CLAUDE.md and docs/lists-and-rows.md are updated.

After merge, Conventions: assets, colors, strings goes into the master ruleset as a required check.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • On this branch: conventions.sh passes (161 imagesets, 161 colorsets). On the master tree it reports the two RadioButtonRow names and both ThumbView lines.
  • conventions-test.sh passes with BSD awk, mawk 1.3.4 (as on ubuntu-latest) and gawk 5.
  • shellcheck and actionlint are clean.
  • swift build and xcodebuild -destination 'generic/platform=iOS Simulator' build succeed. The compiled Assets.car holds SwitchThumbShadow at 0.10 / 0.13 / 0.15.
  • Five rounds of local review (code review plus edge-case lanes), with the findings fixed and pinned by test cases.

Follow-ups, not in this PR:

  • Some asset names still go through plain strings the checker can't see: NavigationBarElement raw values, Toast.iconName and ConverterArrowBadge's iconName:. They should go through DashIcon instead, or the library should adopt Xcode-generated asset symbols so that a missing asset becomes a compile error.
  • Color.dash.shadow is still UIColor(red:) in code. Moving it to a colorset would let us drop the Color+DashUI.swift exemption.
  • SwitchThumbShadow keeps the old look in dark mode. Making it clear in dark mode like shadow is a design call.

Breaking Changes

None. Color.dash.switchThumbShadow is additive. The checkbox style starts drawing its icons, which is what it was meant to do.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a reusable switch-thumb shadow color to the public color palette.
  • Improvements
    • Checkbox-style radio rows now use the shared checked and unchecked icons, keeping their appearance aligned with the icon set.
  • Chores
    • CI now checks repository conventions and runs tests for those checks.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the lists-and-rows guide to reflect the icons used by checkbox-style radio rows.

Add a Linux CI job that runs .github/scripts/conventions.sh and its test
suite. It checks DashIcon raw values and Color.dash tokens against the asset
catalog, literal asset names and the bundle they are looked up in, colors
built from components, the bundle of localized strings, and availability
checks at or below the Package.swift floor.

Fix what it finds on master: RadioButtonRow's checkbox style asked for
imagesets that do not exist and drew nothing; ThumbView's shadow color moves
to a SwitchThumbShadow token with the same value.

Explanation

The title "ci: asset and convention checks" matches the main change. The PR adds a Linux CI job and a convention checker script (.github/scripts/conventions.sh) that enforces asset, color, localization-bundle, and availability rules, with a fixture-based test suite. The two component fixes and the docs updates are smaller parts of the change, so the title does not cover them. That is acceptable for a title. The title uses the conventional "ci:" prefix and names the primary change without noise.

Read the whole diff: the script, its test suite, the workflow job and the two fixes. This was a static read; the scripts were not executed as part of this review.

Nothing blocking. The approach is sound: masking string contents before matching, parsing call arguments with depth tracking, and the test suite that breaks a fresh copy of the tree once per rule (including the shapes that must pass) make the checker much less likely to rot or to produce noise. The two fixes match what the checker reports on master: RadioButtonRow's checkbox now uses the existing DashIcon.Checkbox cases (whose imagesets are the ones holding the old file names), and SwitchThumbShadow carries the same sRGB value as the literal it replaces.

Two small points inline: one latent false positive in rule 7, and one header line that undersells rule 6.

Noted, no change needed here:

  • Only *.imageset and *.colorset are listed. If a *.symbolset is ever added, a literal Image("name", bundle: .dashUIKit) pointing at it would be reported as a missing imageset. Nothing in the catalog is affected today.
  • The follow-ups in the description (raw-string asset names in NavigationBarElement, Toast.iconName, ConverterArrowBadge, and Color.dash.shadow) look right as separate work.

@available(iOS, introduced: 13, deprecated: 17, message: "Use X") is reported here with "drop it", but that attribute also carries the deprecation, so following the message would silently un-deprecate the API. Nothing in the package uses this shape today, so it is latent.

Suggestion: when the attribute also has deprecated, obsoleted, renamed or message, either skip it or say that only introduced: can go, and pin the shape in the "deprecated, unavailable and above the floor are allowed" case.

Fixed in b7dd96f. When the attribute also has deprecated:, obsoleted:, renamed: or message:, the message now says to remove only introduced: and keep the rest. The shape is pinned in the "@available at or below the floor" test case.

Wording only: for NSLocalizedString the scan checks every call, literal key or not (line 225 narrows only String(localized:) / AttributedString(localized:) to literal keys). That is the right behaviour, since NSLocalizedString always needs the bundle, but the header reads as if a variable key were skipped.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Require a components object for each colorset color.

The colorset count in .github/scripts/conventions.sh treats any object under .color as a color. An entry with "color": {} therefore counts toward the "at least one image or color" rule. A colorset whose only entry is "color": {} passes this check. The check does not verify that the color has a value.

.github/scripts/conventions.sh:192-195
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check the bundle value for nonliteral UIImage(named:) and .custom calls.

When the asset name is not a literal, the scanner checks only whether in: or bundle: is present. It does not check that the value names the package bundle. A call such as UIImage(named: iconName, in: .main, compatibleWith: nil) or DashIconSource.custom(iconName, bundle: .main) passes the convention job. The scanner header says these bundles are checked, so the code does not match its documented contract.

🐛 Suggested fix

- out(li, "asset looked up in the host app bundle: pass " label ": .dashUIKit")
+ else if (call ~ /UI|custom/) bundle_ok(label, li)

bundle_ok reports the same message when the argument is absent. When the argument is present, it checks the value with pkg(). Any bundle expression that is not .module, .dashUIKit, Bundle.dashUIKit, or #bundle is now reported. A variable passed as in: or bundle: is reported too, which matches the literal-name path. Add a failing fixture to .github/scripts/tests/conventions-test.sh for a nonliteral name with in: .main.

.github/scripts/conventions.sh:179-180
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Read the previous line when .custom( starts a line after a dash: label.

assets() checks the text before .custom( on the same physical line only. A Swift line break after dash: therefore hides a valid icon lookup from the scanner. Neither the imageset check nor the package-bundle check runs for it.

Image(
    dash:
        .custom("MissingIcon", bundle: .dashUIKit)
)

On this layout, before is empty when line 179 runs, so the call is skipped. If the call were recognized, lines 183-190 would emit an L record for MissingIcon. check_literals would then report the missing imageset, and the final error handling would fail the job. The script header says calls are parsed across several lines (line 22). It also lists .custom( after DashIconSource, dash:, or an …icon: label as handled (lines 27-28). This layout falls outside that handled scope.

A safe fix reads the previous physical line when the current prefix is whitespace only. M[li - 1] is already masked and comment-stripped. The li > 1 guard keeps the read inside the current file.

Suggested fix
+ # A line break can separate `dash:` from `.custom(`. Read the previous line too.
+        if (call ~ /custom/ && li > 1 && before ~ /^[[:space:]]*$/) before = M[li - 1] before
         if (call ~ /custom/ && before !~ /(DashIconSource[[:space:]]*=?|(dash|[A-Za-z]*[Ii]con):)[[:space:]]*$/) continue

Add a fixture to .github/scripts/tests/conventions-test.sh for the wrapped dash: case with a missing name. The fix does not cover a blank or comment line between the label and .custom(.

.github/scripts/conventions.sh:208-211
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add components to the Rule 5 label list in conventions.sh.

colors() matches CGColor( calls, but it does not flag CGColor(colorSpace:components:). The label list checks red, gray, hex, and similar labels, but not components. The rule text says colors built from components are banned. This initializer builds a color from a component array, so the check misses a case the rule is meant to catch. No other rule flags this call, so the checker reports OK and CI passes.

The fix is one label. Existing sources do not use components:, so the fix should not add current violations. Update the header comment at line 14 to match, and add a failing fixture to .github/scripts/tests/conventions-test.sh next to the existing CGColor(gray:) case.

.github/scripts/tests/conventions-test.sh:82
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pin the duplicate-declaration fixture to a name the test declares itself, not to the first imageset by path.

img is set from first_set imageset (conventions-test.sh:76). first_set sorts imagesets by path. The first path is Icons & Illustrations/Components/Checkbox/checkbox-checkmark-checked.imageset, so img is checkbox-checkmark-checked today. That name has one icon declaration, at Icon_DashUI.swift:99. The fixture at line 82 adds case dup for that name, so the expectation at line 88 (is declared more than once) holds now.

If a contributor adds a valid imageset that is referenced only by a literal and whose path sorts before Components/Checkbox/, that imageset becomes img. conventions.sh accepts literal-only references, because icon_used (line 366) feeds the not-referenced check. The duplicate check counts only icon declarations. So case dup is not a duplicate, the is declared more than once line is missing from the output, expect increments failures, and the script exits 1 (conventions-test.sh, final block). The Conventions: assets, colors, strings CI job then fails on a convention-compliant tree (ci.yml:82-86).

Choose the fixture name in a way that does not depend on path order. Change the renamed imageset case (around lines 76-80) and the duplicate case together, because both use img. Changing only the duplicate case would not be safe.
