| On a node running Talos v1.14 (any preset): `talm apply --dry-run -f nodes/<node>.yaml`, then apply. Expected: the drift preview lists `Kube*` documents rather than `cluster.*` fields, the node accepts the config, and `talm get kubeletconfig` / `talm get staticpods` show the kubelet and control-plane args from values. On cozystack, `kubectl get ds --namespace kube-system` lists neither `kube-flannel` nor `kube-proxy`, and control-plane nodes carry no `node-role.kubernetes.io/control-plane:NoSchedule` taint. | ||

| Partial edits of replace-tagged typed fields, on a node running Talos v1.14: in a v1.14 node file add a second entry to `podSubnets` of the `KubeNetworkConfig` document (keep the rendered one), and on cozystack with `oidcIssuerUrl` set add a second audience to the `KubeAuthenticationConfig` jwt entry. In the same file add a second entry to a list-valued flag under `extraArgs` of `KubeAPIServerConfig` (for example `feature-gates: [A=true, B=true]` over a rendered `[A=true]`). Run `talm apply --dry-run -f nodes/<node>.yaml`. Expected: the config sent keeps the rendered pod subnet next to the added one, and `KubeAuthenticationConfig` still carries the `anonymous` block with `/livez`, `/readyz` and `/healthz` next to both audiences, and the flag keeps both entries. |

Set a rendered flag before testing list preservation.
The B11 setup does not set extraApiServerArgs.feature-gates. Without a rendered [A=true] value, this step cannot test whether the node-file edit preserves that value. Set the flag in values.yaml before adding [A=true, B=true] to the node file.

Fixed in a74f1bf. A rendered [A=true] can't come from values.yaml, because talm.render.component_args refuses lists. The step now sets a scalar flag so extraArgs renders, adds feature-gates: [A=true] to the project's templates/_helpers.tpl, and re-renders with talm template -I before the node file edits. I checked the render offline on generic.

@lexfrei Thanks for the correction. talm.render.component_args rejects lists, so my proposed values.yaml setup was incorrect. The template-based setup you describe provides the rendered list needed for this test.

Learning: In cozystack/talm, charts/talm/templates/_helpers.tpl defines talm.render.component_args to accept scalar component-argument values and reject maps and lists. Tests that need rendered list-valued extraArgs must use a template-defined list rather than pass a list through extraApiServerArgs in values.yaml.

From contract v1.14 the generated bundle already carries every Kubernetes document, filled with values only the generator knows: component images pinned to kubernetesVersion, the control-plane node label and taint, the kubelet seccomp default, endpoint-derived documents. A chart document of the same identity replaced the bundle's copy wholesale, so a chart could only emit these documents by re-implementing the generator. Kube* documents and delete selectors from the chart now go through the config patcher, the same strategic merge the apply path already uses. The first bundle pass sees the chart's KubeClusterConfig, so the regenerated bundle derives its endpoint-dependent documents from it. A full render carries the merged result; a non-full render keeps the chart's documents verbatim for apply to merge again. Every other kind keeps replace semantics: the bundle's HostnameConfig carries `auto: stable`, which Talos refuses next to a chart hostname. The hint for a v1alpha1/typed-document mix above v1.13 no longer claims the charts cannot emit the typed documents. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
Both presets carried two copies each of the advertisedSubnets fallback (kubelet validSubnets and etcd advertisedSubnets). The v1.14 contract needs the same list in KubeNodeConfig, so it moves into one library define instead of growing more copies. talm.render.component_args takes an optional indent: typed documents carry extraArgs at the top level rather than under cluster.<component>. talm.contract.kubedocs answers whether the render targets the contract that moved the Kubernetes settings into typed documents. Rendered output is unchanged. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>

| Both presets now pin `talosVersion: "v1.14"`, generic with `kubernetesVersion: "v1.37.0"` and cozystack with `kubernetesVersion: "v1.36.5"` and a Talos v1.14.2 install image, so their embedded hashes changed: an existing project that pins a baseline in `.talm-preset.lock` will report preset drift until it is re-synced. That is the mechanism described below, and `talm init --update --preset <preset>` re-syncs both at once — but read this before running it. | ||
|
|
||
| It rewrites `Chart.yaml` from the preset, keeping only `name` and `version`, so the preset's pins replace whatever the project used. The preset pins `kubernetesVersion: "v1.36.2"`, which is what a project running with an empty key was already rendering on the Talos v1.13 line — accepting the re-sync leaves the control plane where it was. That holds only while the two track each other; the moment the preset's pin and the version the project actually runs diverge, accepting the preset's value moves the control plane, and a move **down** is not something Kubernetes supports. Set the key to the version your cluster runs rather than keeping whatever the re-sync wrote, and copy any other settings back too. The command also refuses to run non-interactively without `--force`. | ||
| It rewrites `Chart.yaml` from the preset, keeping only the project's `name` (`version` becomes the talm binary's own), so the preset's pins replace whatever the project used. A v1.14 contract is only valid for nodes already running Talos v1.14 or newer, and a different `kubernetesVersion` moves the control plane on the next apply, while a move **down** is not something Kubernetes supports. Set both keys back to what your cluster runs rather than keeping whatever the re-sync wrote, and copy any other settings back too. Once the nodes run Talos v1.14 and the project pins it, re-render the node files with `talm template -I`, after saving any hand-written body below the modeline since `-I` rewrites it: files rendered on an earlier contract carry v1alpha1 Kubernetes fields the v1.14 render refuses. The same run offers the preset's `values.yaml` too, and on cozystack its `image` now points at the Talos v1.14.2 build: decline that change, or restore your own `image` and values afterwards, unless the nodes are meant to move to it. The command also refuses to run non-interactively without `--force`. |

REQUEST CHANGES. With the new default pin, dry-run prints the Kubernetes CA and service-account private keys that it masked on v1.13.
Context: both presets move to the Talos v1.14 contract, where Kubernetes settings live in typed documents.
Blockers
B1: dry-run diff prints CA and service-account private keys on the v1.14 default
File: pkg/commands/preflight_apply_safety_modedetails.go:159
redactValuesInText masks every collected secret with strings.ReplaceAll over the dry-run diff text. On v1.13 the secrets are single-line base64, so they match. From v1.14 the CA, aggregator CA and service-account keys are multi-line PEM, and in the node's diff each key line is its own line with a +/- prefix and indent, so the whole value never matches and nothing is masked.
Same scenario on both contracts (node and rendered config with different secrets, as after a CA rotation), real diff from configdiff.DiffConfigs through collectConfigSecretValues and redactValuesInText: v1.13 prints none of the rendered side's secrets, v1.14 prints issuingCA.key of KubeAPIServerCAConfig and KubeAggregatorCAConfig and issuer.privateKey of KubeServiceAccountConfig. I also ran talm apply --dry-run from this branch against a node on Talos v1.14.2 and got the same three key blocks in full (106 body lines). The structured drift preview is masked fine. The new test at contract_drift_typed_secret_redaction_test.go:214 checks what the collector returns, not what gets printed.
talm apply --dry-run prints this diff to stderr, and every new project gets the v1.14 default from this PR. Whoever reads that terminal, CI log or pasted comment can mint cluster-admin client certs. The description lists typed-document secrets as fixed.
Fix: put every line of a multi-line secret into the set (skip the PEM armor lines) and add a test that runs real DiffConfigs output through the print path.
Follow-ups
- The old side of the diff is never redacted, on any contract. With different secrets on node and in the render, 9 secrets (CA keys, both tokens, the etcd encryption secret) print on the
-side on v1.13 and v1.14 alike, becausecollectConfigSecretValuesreads only the rendered config. It predates this PR. Collect from the on-node config too, the drift preview already fetches it. - charts/generic/values.yaml:110, charts/cozystack/values.yaml:188, docs/manual-test-plan.md:403 and :424 use
feature-gates: "NodeSwap=true"andmaxPods: "256"as kubelet examples. On a Talos v1.14.2 nodetalm applyaccepts both, thenKubeletSpecControllerloops onunrecognized type: int32andunknown field "feature-gates", and the setting never reaches the kubelet.maxPods: 256withfeatureGates: {NodeSwap: true}applies. The examples predate this PR, but it rewrites the sentence above them, so fixing them here is cheap. - docs/configuration/node-files.md:7 shows a pre-v1.12 node file as the freshly written one (#258).
- charts/generic/templates/_helpers.tpl:130: nothing covers
certSANswithoutextraApiServerArgs. With thecertSANsterm dropped from the condition,go test ./pkg/engine/stays green. - docs/operations/upgrading.md:57 says
talm init --updaterefuses to run non-interactively without--force, butpkg/commands/init.go:1297refuses only when a preset file differs. - Not run on real hardware yet (disks, links, VIP, drbd, zfs). B11 from the manual test plan on a stand before merge.
From contract v1.14 Talos keeps the cluster name, endpoint, kubelet, node IP, pod and service networks and control-plane component settings in typed documents, and refuses a config that still sets the v1alpha1 fields next to them. Both presets wrote only the v1alpha1 shape, so neither rendered at v1.14; the cozystack preset failed even earlier, on a nodeLabels delete against a key the generator no longer writes there. On v1.14 and later the charts now emit KubeClusterConfig, KubeNodeConfig, KubeletConfig, KubeNetworkConfig and the control-plane component documents, carrying only what the preset sets; the engine merges them into the generated ones. etcd stays in v1alpha1, which has no typed counterpart. The cozystack preset also deletes the flannel and discovery-service documents and the control-plane taint and load-balancer exclusion label, and disables kube-proxy, matching what it turned off on earlier contracts. kube-apiserver no longer takes OIDC flags on this contract, so the cozystack OIDC settings become a JWT authenticator in KubeAuthenticationConfig with the same claims, audience and username prefix the flags defaulted to. Authentication and authorization flags in extraApiServerArgs fail the render instead of failing on the node. Earlier contracts render byte-for-byte as before. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
The drift preview and the dry-run diff the node returns mask secrets by a list of v1alpha1 paths. From contract v1.14 the generator puts the Kubernetes CA keys, the service-account key, the etcd encryption keys and the discovery secret in typed documents instead, so `talm apply --dry-run` against a node with different secrets printed them in the clear. Registry credentials, the client key of RegistryTLSConfig, the HCloud API token, SideroLink tokens and volume encryption passphrases leaked the same way on every contract that has those documents. Secret fields are now also listed per typed document kind, from what each document's Talos Redact method masks: a field name alone cannot tell KubeEtcdEncryptionConfig's `config` from KubeletConfig's. A test generates a config, lets Talos redact it, and requires every field Talos masked to be masked in both outputs. In the typed documents the CA and service-account keys are multi-line PEM, and the node's diff prints each line of a key on a line of its own behind a `+`/`-` marker and the indentation, so the whole value never matched. Lines of multi-line secrets are now masked one diff line at a time; the PEM armor lines stay. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
Fresh projects now render the v1.14 config shape the charts emit. generic moves to Kubernetes v1.37.0, the default of the Talos v1.14 line, as its Chart.yaml comment prescribes. cozystack moves to Kubernetes v1.36.5, inside the v1.14 support window, and its install image to the cozystack Talos v1.14.2 build: a v1.14-contract config carries typed documents a Talos v1.12 node cannot load, so the image has to move with the pin. Projects that re-sync the preset Chart.yaml or values.yaml pick up the new versions; review them against what the cluster runs before applying. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
The render is checked for v1alpha1 fields the contract moved into typed documents, but apply then lays the node file over it. A node file rendered before the project moved to v1.14 still carries machine.kubelet, cluster.clusterName and the rest, so the merged config mixed both shapes and only the node rejected it, without talm's hint. The merged config now goes through the same check before it is sent, with a hint to re-render the node file with `talm template -I`. The render-time hint names the way out that actually applies there. A render never reads the node file's body, so re-rendering one fixes nothing: unpinned, the charts write v1alpha1 on every contract and only a pin helps; pinned at v1.14 or newer, the project's vendored templates predate the typed documents and `talm init --update` re-syncs them. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
Before a node file is laid over the rendered config, the engine prunes from its body what the render already carries. Where Talos replaces instead of merging, that prune is wrong: the body is cut down to the operator's delta and the replace writes only the delta. The engine knew the `merge:"replace"` fields of v1alpha1 and NetworkRuleConfig only. From Talos v1.14 the charts write KubeNetworkConfig, and on cozystack with OIDC KubeAuthenticationConfig, into every node file. Adding a pod subnet there dropped the rendered one; adding an OIDC audience dropped the anonymous health-check access. A body BGPInstanceConfig or CRIBaseRuntimeSpecConfig over a rendered one lost entries the same way. Typed documents now root their prune paths at their kind, since one field name is replace-tagged on one kind and merged on another (KubeAdmissionControlConfig's configuration merges), and the table carries every replace-tagged field of the typed documents. Component extraArgs, in v1alpha1 and in the typed documents, merge key by key and replace the whole value of each key. A list-valued flag such as feature-gates extended in the node file lost its rendered entries; the prune now drops only keys the body restates exactly. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
The preset drift warning and the upgrading guide said that `talm init --update` shows a diff of the new preset against the project's templates and keeps the operator's edits. It does neither: each differing preset file gets an `Overwrite? [y/N]` prompt with no diff, and accepting replaces the file whole. The warning now says that, and tells the operator to decline edited files and merge them by hand. The guide describes the prompt, the whole-file replace, `--force`, and that the baseline advances even when every file is declined. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <f@lex.la>
The dry-run diff the node returns prints the config it runs next to the one being applied. talm masked it by the secret values of the rendered config only, so when the two carried different secrets, as after a CA rotation or with a regenerated secrets.yaml, the node's CA keys, tokens and encryption secrets printed on the removed side in the clear, on every contract. On a dry run, the only apply whose response carries that diff, the apply paths now read the node's config before applying, as the drift preview already does, and mask its secret values too. A node on a maintenance connection has no config to read. A read or decode failure leaves that side unmasked with a warning but never fails the apply. A test runs a real Talos config diff between two configs with different secrets through the print path, on v1.13 and v1.14, and requires every field Talos redacts on either side to be masked. I reran my repros on the new head: real configdiff.DiffConfigs output through the print path for a v1.13 rotation, a v1.14 rotation and a v1.13 to v1.14 move on the same secrets.
