What

Follow-up to #376, addressing the two deferred review comments on how spec.clientService.trafficDistribution behaves on apiservers that only partly support it.

  • Value rejected (before Kubernetes 1.34 the apiserver refuses PreferSameZone / PreferSameNode on a Service): the operator now reconciles the client Service without the field and keeps going, instead of returning the error from ensureServices and stopping bootstrap, scaling, member replacement and status updates for the whole cluster.
  • Field dropped (an apiserver that does not know trafficDistribution, e.g. 1.29 and 1.30): the operator checks the Service the apiserver returns, and when the value did not survive it stops resending it instead of patching the Service on every reconcile.

In both cases a Warning Event is emitted on the EtcdCluster (TrafficDistributionRejected / TrafficDistributionNotPersisted), and the value is backed off for an hour. After that it is tried again, so it lands on its own once the apiserver is upgraded, without an operator restart. Changing the value in the spec retries at once.

Details

  • Only a rejection whose causes all point at spec.trafficDistribution is worked around; a Service that is invalid for any other reason is still a reconcile error.
  • The backoff is in memory, per client Service and per value. After an operator restart an unsupported value costs one more failed write.
  • The cluster controller now gets an event recorder. The events RBAC rule was already in the chart (from the defrag controllers), so the generated role does not change.

Testing

  • Controller tests with an interceptor modelling the apiserver: rejection on create and on patch, value dropped on create and on patch, unrelated Invalid errors still propagate, no resend and no repeated Event within the backoff, retry after it, and a spec change clearing it.
  • envtest (1.33): pins the error shape the controller matches on, using a real PreferSameZone rejection; skips on 1.34+ where the value is accepted.
  • make test passes; make generate manifests produces no drift.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Client Services now continue reconciling when the Kubernetes API server rejects or fails to retain a traffic distribution setting. The setting is omitted, and a Warning Event explains what happened.
    • The operator retries the setting after one hour, or immediately when its configured value changes.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance to describe rejection, non-persistence, and retry behavior.

…reconcile

Before Kubernetes 1.34 the apiserver rejects PreferSameZone and
PreferSameNode on a Service, and ensureServices runs ahead of bootstrap,
scaling and member replacement, so the rejection stopped the whole
cluster. An apiserver that does not know the field drops it instead, so
the drift check never converged and the Service was patched on every
reconcile.

Reconcile the client Service without the value when the apiserver
rejects it or does not persist it, emit a Warning Event on the
EtcdCluster, and back the value off for an hour so it is neither resent
every reconcile nor lost once the apiserver is upgraded.

The cluster controller recognises a rejected trafficDistribution by an
Invalid error whose causes all name spec.trafficDistribution. Check that
against the envtest apiserver, which before 1.34 refuses PreferSameZone.

📝 Walkthrough

Client Service reconciliation now handles rejected or unpersisted trafficDistribution values by omitting the field, emitting a Warning Event, and retrying after one hour. A changed spec value triggers an immediate retry.

Changes: Traffic Distribution Compatibility

Client Service reconciliation emits Warning Events and retries without rejected or unpersisted values. The reconciler receives an event recorder, and ensureService returns the API-server-reported Service. Tests and descriptions cover rejection, non-persistence, and retry behavior.

Restoring a recently rejected traffic distribution value may leave it unapplied until the backoff expires. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Clear the trafficDistribution backoff when the spec is unset.

After an unsupported value is rejected, removing spec.clientService.trafficDistribution leaves the backoff entry active. Restoring the same value before the one-hour expiry then suppresses it, so the value is not retried on the next reconcile. Clear the entry when the configuration is absent.
