Summary

Implements the OpenSpec change trim-ci-jobs. Each CI job now catches a fault that no other job catches on the same event (ADR-107, Proposed).

  1. Empty-extra floor entries removed. llamacpp and openrouter install nothing beyond the base (ADR-083).
  2. Chroma job folded into Coverage. chroma-extra is deleted. Coverage and the chroma floor entry read their JUnit report and fail when a test skips with the "chroma extra not installed" reason. Checked locally: exit 1 on a base report with 65 Chroma skips, exit 0 on a report from a chroma + hybrid install.
  3. Floors matrix scoped by event. New Floor matrix scope job. A pull request that changes none of pyproject.toml, uv.lock and ci.yml runs the base entry only. Pushes, nightly, manual runs and other pull requests run every extra. A git error or empty SHAs keep the full list. The floors job now also runs on the schedule.
  4. Leiden on Python 3.11 and 3.14 only (abi3 wheels).
  5. Coverage runs in parallel (-n auto --maxprocesses=8).

Docs: ADR-107, addenda to ADR-042 and TDR-033, AGENTS.md, tests/AGENTS.md, src/omrs/core/vectordb/AGENTS.md, docs/guides/testing.md ("What CI runs"), scripts/local_ci.sh header. Test files change skip-reason text only; the tripwire pins are unchanged.

The delta spec words the empty-extra rule as "adds nothing beyond the base". pdf-inspector repeats a base dependency at the same floor, so it has no floor entry, as before.

Job counts

Pull request kind Before After
No dependency or ci.yml change 23 (run 40874653858) 12 (11 run, Tier 2 skipped)
Changes a dependency file or ci.yml 23 19

This pull request changes ci.yml, so its own run is the 19-job case.

Run Jobs Wall time Coverage job
Before: 40874653858 23 26.5 min 26.4 min (serial)
After: 40886570069 (this PR) 19 14.2 min 14.2 min (parallel)

Floor matrix scope printed the full list, with no warning. 8 Floor resolution entries ran, with no llamacpp or openrouter entry. Leiden extra ran on 3.11 and 3.14. Both chroma skip steps ran and passed. GitHub runners have 2 cores, so xdist starts 2 workers. The last three v3 Coverage jobs took 17.4 to 26.4 min.

Coverage: serial vs parallel

Codecov baseline (task 4.1) is not available. Codecov has processed no v3 commit since 2026-10-19 (da0de80e, 94.35 %). Every later commit, including the v3 tip b2f98f66, stays "pending" although the upload step succeeds. This started around the repository rename to cmdaltctr/omrs. Last processed serial total: 94.35 % at da0de80e.

Substitute evidence, same commit, same extras as the Coverage job, local run:

Run Lines Branches Combined Time
Serial 28,771 / 29,795 6,995 / 7,592 95.6643 % 8 min 14 s
Parallel (-n auto --maxprocesses=8) 28,771 / 29,795 6,995 / 7,592 95.6643 % 1 min 54 s

Both runs: 9,349 passed, 10 skipped, 23 deselected.

Codecov head total for this pull request (parallel run): 94.76 % (29,302 lines, 27,767 hits, 3,748 branches). Codecov shows no base total, because the v3 tip is still pending, so the 0.1-point check against a Codecov serial base cannot run yet.

Checks

  • ./scripts/local_ci.sh passed, no SKIPPED step.
  • openspec validate trim-ci-jobs --strict passed.
  • actionlint passed after every ci.yml edit.

After merge

  • On the first ordinary pull request into v3, check that Floor matrix scope prints [""] and only the base floor entry runs. Record it in ADR-107.
  • No nightly floor run starts until this workflow reaches main (accepted trade-off, ADR-107).

Remove the llamacpp and openrouter floor entries, which install nothing
beyond the base. Delete the chroma-extra job. Coverage and the chroma
floor entry now read their JUnit report and fail when a test skips with
the chroma extra not installed reason. Skip reasons and guides name the
Coverage job. TDR-033 gets a dated addendum.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (tasks 1.1 to 1.6)
A new Floor matrix scope job builds the floors matrix. A pull request
that changes none of pyproject.toml, uv.lock and ci.yml runs the base
entry only. Pushes, the nightly and manual runs and other pull requests
run every extra. Any git error, or empty pull-request SHAs, keep the
full list. The floors job now runs on the schedule too.

AGENTS.md gotcha 13 and an ADR-042 addendum say when the extra entries
run. The delta spec words the empty-extra rule as adding nothing beyond
the base, which also covers pdf-inspector.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (tasks 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5)
Both Leiden packages ship abi3 wheels, so the lowest and the highest
supported versions cover the range.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (task 3.1, GitHub check pending)
Coverage now runs the fast suite with -n auto --maxprocesses=8. A local
run with the job's extras passed in 114 s, wrote coverage.xml and
junit.xml, and the chroma skip check exited 0 on that report. AGENTS.md
says Coverage runs in parallel too.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (tasks 4.2, 4.3, 4.5)
ADR-107 records one CI job per distinct check, the floor-entry rule for
new extras, and the trade-offs: extra floors show after merge on a
pull request without dependency changes, and no nightly floor run
starts until this workflow reaches main. The testing guide lists each
job, what only it checks, and when it runs.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (tasks 5.1, 5.2)
local_ci.sh passed with no SKIPPED step, openspec validate passed, and
the branch diff holds no personal identifiers.

Change: trim-ci-jobs (tasks 6.1, 6.2)

Walkthrough

The CI workflow now selects dependency-floor entries based on the event and pull-request changes. It removes a separate Chroma job, checks Chroma-related JUnit skips in Coverage and the Chroma floor entry, narrows the Leiden Python matrix, and runs Coverage tests in parallel.

Changes

CI Job Consolidation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select dependency-floor entries
.github/workflows/ci.yml, AGENTS.md, docs/adr/*, docs/guides/testing.md, openspec/changes/trim-ci-jobs/*
A new floors-scope job selects the floor matrix. Pull requests with valid SHAs that change none of the specified dependency or workflow files run only the base entry. Missing SHAs and diff failures retain the full matrix. The base entry runs on every pull request. Redundant floor entries are removed. Specifications and decision records describe the matrix rules.
Run Chroma checks in existing jobs
.github/workflows/ci.yml, docs/tdr/*, src/omrs/core/vectordb/AGENTS.md, tests/AGENTS.md, tests/test_*, scripts/local_ci.sh, openspec/changes/trim-ci-jobs/specs/dependency-floor-integrity/*
The separate chroma-extra job is removed. Coverage runs the fast suite and fails if its JUnit report is missing or records a skip for the missing-extra reason. The Chroma floor entry also checks its report for that skip. Test comments and guidance now name Coverage as the Chroma test job.
Update test matrices and CI guidance
.github/workflows/ci.yml, AGENTS.md, docs/guides/testing.md, openspec/changes/trim-ci-jobs/design.md
The Leiden Python matrix is reduced to 3.11 and 3.14. Coverage uses xdist with up to eight workers. CI instructions and the testing guide describe parallel test jobs and CI triggers.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c4542

The CI consolidation is mergeable with bounded documentation follow-up: releases can precede post-merge floor results, and manual runs can target a selected branch rather than only main.
