what

  • Variables: plural names for collections, no type suffixes (_map), _arn vs _id follow the provider argument, feature prefixes, standard security group input names, deprecation steps. _enabled toggles get nullable = false; enable_*, create_*, use_* are not allowed.
  • Descriptions: every variable description says what it controls, the unit, accepted values, what null/""/[] means and related inputs. Fixed attribute order for variable and output blocks.
  • Scalars vs objects: prefer scalar inputs (own README row, own validation, simple Atmos override). Use an object only for settings that have no meaning alone, such as timeouts. Keep objects shallow. The existing "Prefer a single object over multiple simple inputs" section is retitled "Use a single object for settings that have no meaning alone" and narrowed to match.
  • Collections: map(object) keyed by a stable name, not list(object).
  • Module design: Atmos creates many instances, not the module (no maps of top-level resources; catalog modules such as datadog-platform are the exception). Keep the HCL simple.
  • Secure defaults: new inputs and resources default to the secure setting (encryption, no public access, TLS 1.2+, IMDSv2, no open ingress, deletion protection, least-privilege IAM). Never make a default less secure. A more secure default on an existing module is major; batch them per module. No paid features on by default without a reason.
  • Outputs: <noun>_<attribute> names, never bare id/arn/name. Descriptions say what is returned when the resource is not created. Use one() (not join("", ...)) for conditional resources.
  • New "Resources and Data Sources" section: default for a single resource, descriptive names for siblings, never this; current for partition/region/caller identity data sources; <purpose>_label; gate on enabled; tag everything.
  • New "Files" section: standard layout and hyphenated file names.
  • New "OpenTofu and Terraform Compatibility" section.

why

  • These conventions are practiced in most active modules (survey of 20 modules + 7 components) but were not written down.
  • We prefer simple interfaces and simple HCL. Atmos is the factory, not Terraform.
  • The existing "sane defaults" line did not say what secure means or how to version a security change.
  • We want modules to work on both OpenTofu and Terraform.

references

  • Follows docs: make versioning labels and breaking changes prescriptive #929 (versioning labels).
  • Open decisions, not included here: null vs "" for optional strings, required partition handling, a standard required_version floor, and the unused "Export all Attributes" output pattern.
  • Known deviation: the new terraform-aws-codeartifact module uses create_domain.

Input naming and deprecation
docs/best-practices/terraform.mdx
Adds input naming, grouping, deprecation, description, and attribute-order conventions.
Output naming and conditional values
docs/best-practices/terraform.mdx
Adds output naming, description, sensitivity, and conditional-value conventions.
Resource naming and configuration

This documentation change has two guidance inconsistencies that could mislead module authors. Fix them in the guide; neither affects production behavior.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document the exception for allow_all_egress.

The required allow_all_egress input is a boolean toggle, but Line 27 requires boolean toggles to end in _enabled. A module author cannot follow both instructions. State that established security-group interface names are exempt from the suffix rule, or change this required name. The referenced module uses allow_all_egress as a boolean input. (github.com)

Renaming or removing an input is a breaking change. To replace an input:

1. Move the old variable to `variables-deprecated.tf`.
2. Set its `default` to `null`.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make deprecated inputs nullable before setting their default to null.

If the old input has nullable = false, setting its default to null conflicts with that declaration. This case is likely for boolean toggles under the guide’s own rule at Line 28. Add a step to remove nullable = false from the old input and make any existing validation accept null. Otherwise, callers that switch to the new input can encounter a validation error.
