The worker that creates a value in the dict -- the one whose add() wins -- puts its name in a slot, once, and slots no longer expire on their own. Request paths no longer renew slots or sync the index, so writer workers keep no local index at all. Only the processes that call list() keep a copy of the index. Their timer gives back the slots whose value is gone and the older slots of a metric registered again, yielding every 500 checks, and then flushes expired entries. The delete_count broadcast and KeyIndex:remove() are gone: a deleted value's slot is given back the same way.

reset()deletes values only for keys that this process has listed.
reset()callsself._key_index:list(), and that call now setsreading = trueon the worker. After that, the worker runs reclaim sweeps on every timer tick. Before this change,list()had no such side effect. As a result, any worker that callsreset()becomes a permanent sweeper and keeps a full local index copy. This weakens the stated memory benefit: writer heap drops from ~24MB to ~1.5MB. Consider a non-marking listing path forreset(), or document the behavior.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Draft for discussion: an alternative to #23/#25 that removes the per-worker key index instead of making its maintenance cheaper.
What changes
Register on create. The worker that creates a value in the dict registers its name in a slot, once. Counters and histograms do this when their worker buffer syncs:
incrwithout an init value returns"not found", thenadd, and only one worker can win theadd. Gauges do it ininc(same pattern) and inset(replace, falling back toadd).Slots have no TTL. No per-request
add()renewal, nosync()on the request path, and noexpire()on slots.Only readers keep an index. A process that calls
list()(metric_data,reset) keepskeys/index. Itsremove_expired_keystimer:getreturns nil) and the older slots of a metric registered again;flush_expired().In every other worker the timer returns immediately.
No more
delete_countbroadcast orKeyIndex:remove().del/resetjust delete the value, and the readers give the slot back.Measurements
10 workers, 200k expiring series, wrk2 at 20k rps, worker 0 is the only reader.
Churn (5000 new series per round, exptime 1s, 8 rounds): each round lists only the live series, one slot is left after the sweep (the error metric), and shdict free space and the reader's heap stay flat.
Trade-offs and open points
list(), slots of expired metrics are never given back and expired values are never flushed (only passive expiry). Possible fix: let writers runflush_expired()too, or document it."not found", not bynewval == step.key_countrepair path and leave holes. In the run above,key_countwas 246878 for 200001 series. This is harmless, but it inflates a new reader's first full sync. It already exists on main.flush_expired()is still the unbatched call from main. fix(keys): reclaim expired entries in batches #23's batching would apply on top.Summary by CodeRabbit
