Fixes #540

Change

ascii85Decode checked for uint32 overflow only when a group had five characters. Short tail groups (2 to 4 characters) are padded with u to five digits before decoding, and the padded value can exceed 0xFFFFFFFF. The >>> 0 then wrapped it silently and produced wrong bytes. The overflow check now runs for every group and returns null for such input, and the >>> 0 wrap is removed because it is no longer needed.

Regression tests are in lib/utils/ascii85.test.ts. They cover one valid full group (<~9jqo^~> decodes to the four bytes Man ) and the three overflow inputs from the issue (<~uu~>, <~uuu~>, <~uuuu~>).

Design choice

The issue proposes rejecting these inputs. The alternative is to decode the tail with the wrapped value. I chose rejection because the issue's arithmetic shows the wrapped bytes are meaningless. If the maintainer prefers a different behaviour for truncated input, the alternative is to skip only the overflowing tail and keep the earlier output.

Test results

Before the fix (new test file, npx jest lib/utils/ascii85.test.ts --coverage=false): 3 failed, 1 passed. The three failures are the overflow inputs, which decoded to [8], [8, 120] and [8, 120, 14].

After the fix (npx jest lib/utils/ascii85.test.ts lib/utils/miam.test.ts --coverage=false): 2 suites passed, 7 tests passed.

Not verified: the full test suite and make lint. Lint on the touched files reports CRLF prettier/prettier errors because this Windows checkout uses core.autocrlf. The same errors appear on untouched files such as lib/utils/miam.ts.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved ASCII85 decoding validation for short trailing groups with values exceeding the supported 32-bit range.
    • Prevented invalid decoded data from being accepted due to unsigned integer coercion.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for valid full groups and invalid oversized short-tail groups.

…int32

Short tail groups (2-4 chars) are padded with 'u' to five digits before
decoding. The uint32 overflow check only ran for full 5-char groups, so a
short tail whose padded value exceeds 0xFFFFFFFF wrapped silently and
emitted wrong bytes. The check now applies to every group and returns
null for such input.

Walkthrough

ascii85Decode now rejects padded short-tail groups when their decoded values exceed uint32. Tests cover full-group decoding and rejection of overflowing tails.

Explanation

Issue #540 requires ascii85Decode to avoid silent uint32 wrapping for 2–4 character tail groups. The change applies the overflow check to every decoded group, removes the >>> 0 value wrap, and returns null for overflowing padded tails. lib/utils/ascii85.test.ts verifies the valid full group and all three issue inputs: <~uu~>, <~uuu~>, and <~uuuu~>.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #540. The source change modifies only the affected overflow behavior, and the added tests cover the requested valid and overflowing ASCII85 cases. No unrelated product behavior or files are changed.

A rabbit checks each ASCII85 line,
And sees the tail values stay in line.
No wrapped bytes hop out of view,
The tests confirm the guard holds true.
Then off it goes, content and pleased.

Bug: ascii85Decode overflow guard only fires for full 5-char groups — short tails can overflow uint32 and silently emit wrapped garbage
