fix(claude): keep Claude session variables set in provider env - #442
DevSpace removes CLAUDECODE, CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT, CLAUDE_CODE_SSE_PORT, and CLAUDE_AGENT_SDK_VERSION before launching Claude Code, so a DevSpace started from inside Claude Code doesn't make its subagent look like a nested session. The removal ran after the provider's configured env was merged in, so a value set explicitly in subagents.providers[].env was dropped too. That broke a real workaround: setting CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT (for example to claude-vscode) to avoid the extra usage SDK-launched Claude Code sessions incur.
The Claude driver now receives the provider's explicit overrides, which the registry already computed but the Claude factory ignored, and claudeCommandEnvironment strips only inherited values, keeping any of those keys the config sets.
Verified on the real path: with the daemon deliberately started under an inherited CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT=cli and the provider configured with claude-vscode, the Claude Code process the daemon launched had CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT=claude-vscode and no CLAUDECODE, and the run completed. A unit test covers the precedence.
Claude Code now respects provider-configured values for supported session environment variables. When no override is configured, those variables are omitted from the inherited environment.
The Claude provider now applies configured environment overrides when preparing queries and launching commands.
DevSpace strips CLAUDECODE, CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT, and related
variables so a DevSpace started inside Claude Code does not make its
subagent look like a nested session. It also stripped values the user
set explicitly in subagents.providers[].env, so a configured
CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT never reached Claude Code. Strip only inherited
values and keep explicit provider overrides.

The Claude adapter now forwards provider-configured environment overrides through runtime and query option creation. The command environment retains configured values for listed Claude Code session variables and removes inherited values when no override is set.

Summary
Pass provider overrides through Claude runtime src/local-agent-adapters.ts, src/local-agent-claude.ts
The Claude adapter passes envOverrides to ClaudeLocalAgentDriver. The driver passes them through runtime creation to claudeQueryOptions.
Apply overrides to the command environment src/local-agent-claude.ts, src/local-agent-adapters.test.ts
claudeCommandEnvironment retains configured values for listed Claude Code session variables and removes inherited values when no override exists. A test checks that CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT is retained and CLAUDECODE is omitted.
Waishnav/devspace#379: Introduced provider instances and the envOverrides flow into driver creation.
Waishnav/devspace#381: Added the provider registry and factory context that supplies envOverrides.
Waishnav/devspace#421: Documents provider environment overlays and precedence over process-level environment variables.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 92eb2
The change preserves explicitly configured Claude session variables while removing inherited values. No merge-blocking defect is established; registration-path coverage would strengthen regression protection.

A rabbit checks the settings with a twitch of each bright ear. Configured values stay in place when Claude’s command draws near. Inherited session variables leave when no override is in view. The adapter passes settings through, from registry to command too. I thump a happy little beat: the environment is true.

Test the configured Claude env override through the registration path.
The new test calls claudeCommandEnvironment directly, so it does not exercise the provider wiring. Removing the envOverrides argument at src/local-agent-adapters.ts:67 or at src/local-agent-claude.ts:297 would not fail any existing test. Add a test that builds drivers with a configured CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT in the provider env, captures the query options, and asserts options.env.CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT.

Review comment at @src/local-agent-adapters.test.ts around lines 60 - 63:
Add a registration-path test in the driver-building flow that configures
CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT through the provider’s env and captures the resulting
query options. Assert that options.env.CLAUDE_CODE_ENTRYPOINT retains the
configured value, so removing envOverrides from the provider wiring causes the
test to fail.
