fix(models): the erasure replay takes its locks first, so it never deadlocks the export worker - #161
Every live apply of models/ replays the account erasure file while the export worker polls. The two could deadlock, and today they did.
Why
On 2026-10-26 at 12:45 the live apply of groot 8f0bb2b failed this file with deadlock detected. The live Postgres log shows:
Process 51128 waits for AccessExclusiveLock on relation 84145; blocked by process 51100.
Process 51100 waits for RowExclusiveLock on relation 84145; blocked by process 51128.
Process 51128: ALTER TABLE public.osionos_account_exports ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY;
Process 51100: … FROM "public"."osionos_account_export_claim"() …
The replay runs in one transaction. Its CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS lines take a ShareLock on osionos_account_exports. The worker's claim then queues for RowExclusiveLock. After that, the replay's ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY asks for AccessExclusiveLock on the same table. Here the victim was the replay, and the second apply converged. Nothing guarantees that, though: the victim could just as well be the worker's claim.
What changed
models/osionos-account-erasure-migration.sql: right after lock_timeout, the file takes AccessExclusiveLock on the four tables it later alters. The order matches osionos_account_erase_run's (deletion request, erasure objects, exports, data map), so the replay and the executor never hold each other's next table. Tables that don't exist yet are skipped, because this transaction creates them.
scripts/verify/account-export-lock-race.sh (new) has the same shape as account-lock-race.sh:
It boots a throwaway grobase Postgres and runs the real runner.
It then runs 20 rounds. Each round queues one export job and runs the replay alongside 3 workers, each calling the claim 40 times.
It counts 40P01 and 55P03, then reads the round's job back: it must be running, which proves the race really ran.
.github/workflows/models-grants.yml: the race runs after make models-grants-verify, and edits to the script trigger the workflow.
Trade-offs
Lock held longer: the replay holds AccessExclusiveLock on these four tables for the whole file, not only from its RLS lines on. The file already took that lock on all four before it committed, so readers wait about as long as before; they just start waiting earlier.
Rejected alternative: guarding each ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY and policy line so a converged replay skips them. That is more code, and it still leaves the index lines' ShareLock in place ahead of any later DDL.
Evidence
Race, before the fix (logs/export-race-red.log): RESULT: 20 runs, 20 deadlocks (40P01), 0 lock timeouts (55P03), with the same lock pair as live.
Race, after: RESULT: 20 runs, 0 deadlocks (40P01), 0 lock timeouts (55P03), exit 0; every round's job was claimed.
make models-grants-verify: RESULT: 350 passed, 0 failed. Fresh and legacy runs both converge, and the second apply is a no-op.
shellcheck -s sh: only SC2317 (info) on the trap-only cleanup, the same finding account-lock-race.sh has 7 times.
The live database already converged on the second apply (checked read-only: data_map 109 rows, RLS on, the ai_runs check validated). This change matters for the next apply, which the AI lane will re-rehearse first.

Bug Fixes
Improved the reliability of account exports while account-erasure records are being updated. This reduces the chance that exports encounter database contention or fail to become available during these operations. Existing account-erasure behavior remains unchanged; the update helps these operations proceed more predictably when they overlap.
…adlocks the export worker
A live apply on 2026-10-26 failed this file with 40P01: its index lines held a ShareLock on osionos_account_exports, the export worker's claim queued for RowExclusiveLock, then ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY asked for AccessExclusiveLock. The file now locks its four tables up front, in osionos_account_erase_run's order. scripts/verify/account-export-lock-race.sh reproduces it (20 of 20 rounds before, 0 after) and runs in the models-grants workflow.
The migration adds ordered ACCESS EXCLUSIVE locks on existing account-erasure tables. A new PostgreSQL harness races migration replay with concurrent export-job claims, and the workflow runs the harness when its script changes.
The script starts an isolated PostgreSQL container, applies setup SQL, and runs the migration runner. The image, paths, and run counts can be configured.
The script runs migration replay alongside export-claim calls, checks SQL errors and job status, and reports results. The workflow triggers on changes to the script and runs it in the catalog job.

Possibly related PRs
Univers42/groot#147 — It introduced the account-erasure migration, export-claim function, and exports table that this change modifies and tests.
Merge Risk: Low · up to e34c5
The new race check can pass despite a replay or claim failure, reducing confidence in its result. Capture those failures before relying on the check; this is a bounded verification risk.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e34c5
The change addresses a lock-order inversion without expanding account-data access or worker privileges. Remaining risk is primarily temporary blocking during migration replay; recovery under sustained contention has not been demonstrated end to end.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed production exposure is availability during migration replay: exclusive relation locks can block readers and writers across accounts using the four tables, rather than only one user’s job. The five-second timeout limits lock acquisition waits, not total transaction duration or lock-holding time.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new lock targets are a fixed list of public-schema tables, quoted as identifiers rather than supplied by account callers. No new caller can choose migration lock targets or invoke privileged claim and erasure functions through this change.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The harness checks for deadlocks and eventual running status, but intentionally counts lock timeouts without failing on them and ignores child exit statuses. It does not inspect rollback residue or retry a failed replay. These are limits on rollout assurance, not evidence that transactional rollback or access controls are broken.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the erasure migration replay now takes its locks first, which prevents a deadlock with the export worker. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe this lock-order fix in the models migration, plus a new race-verification script and workflow wiring. The title matches the primary change from the developer's perspective and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. The title is 94 characters, which is slightly long but within reasonable limits for a conventional-commit style title.

Record exit statuses so unclassified replay and claim failures fail the round.
The loop at line 139 discards each process's exit status with || true. count_sqlstates classifies output only by the patterns 40P01, deadlock detected, 55P03, lock timeout, and ERROR:. A replay or claim that exits non-zero with other output, such as a FATAL: line or a connection error, is counted in none of the categories. If another claimer then sets the job to running, the round passes, and the final check can exit 0 after that process failed.
Record each process's exit status. Count a non-zero exit as an error when no classified pattern explains it. Keep 55P03 lock timeouts in the timeouts count, as the script header describes.
