Read each realm's bankruptcy once per trade recalculation - #202
Conversation
Opening a guild that earns no trade reran the whole province trade flood every time, and the first guild view after a restart repeated the startup run. Each flood also rebuilt every province owner's stability, with a treasury read, once per foreign guild it reached. - A guild menu now refreshes trade at most once a minute; settlement, staff topology changes and inactivity still recalculate every time. - A full recalculation counts as the latest one, so the startup run satisfies the first menu open. - Stability reports are kept for the length of one recalculation only. Nothing the flood writes feeds stability, so the results are the same. - Guild lookup by id walks each realm's guilds without copying the list, in the same order and with the same case-insensitive match. …read Review follow-up. The minute-long menu throttle could leave trade and production at stale values (for example right after a deposit clears a bankruptcy) for movement power, civil war and pillage, so the guild view recalculates on every zero-income open again, exactly as before. Each run is still cheaper because stability is assessed once per realm per run. - Guild lookups off the server thread read a copy of each realm's guilds, as before, so async previews cannot hit a concurrent modification. - Each recalculation, including a nested preview with its own law overlay, keeps its own stability reports; runs stay confined to their thread. Review follow-up. Counting the startup run as the latest one meant changes made between startup and the first guild view (a deposit, for example) waited for the next recalculation, so recalculate() no longer marks the dirty check. Results now match the old behaviour exactly; only the cost of each run drops, through the per-run stability reports. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ility Review follow-up. Office unrest wears off continuously, so a realm's stability can cross a threshold between two provinces of one run; keeping the whole report would have frozen it. Only the bankruptcy check, a ledger read that nothing in a recalculation changes, is now kept for the run. Modifiers, unrest, laws and everything else in stability are read live on every ask, exactly as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up. An async preview shares live guilds with the server, so a bank removed meanwhile must be seen: previews now read every bankruptcy check live, as before. A failed ledger read closes the ledger and every balance then reads as zero, so a closed or missing ledger drops the run's answers and reads live too. The only finding is a risk this PR doesn't change: off-thread lookups use the same getGuilds() copy as before. See the reply on the thread; locking every guild-map change is tracked as a follow-up.

Why
A spark profile on Main (2026-10-21, https://spark.lucko.me/QVIonmUGd0) showed main-thread freezes of about 2 s on guild-menu clicks:
GuildView → ProvinceManager.recalculate → trade flood → Province.foreignTradeFactor → Government.getStability → StateStability.facts → Guild.isBankrupt → Bank.getWealth → DenarEconomy Ledger.balance (SQLite)Denars.balancewas about 856 ms of the roughly 1,040 ms spent in stability.FactionManager.getGuildByStringcopied every faction's guild list on every call, which added up to about 11 s over 23 minutes.Change
Game results are unchanged:
GuildViewandGovernmentare identical tomain.BankruptcyMemo: during one recalculation (recalculate, recalculateQuiet, recalculateForSingleGuild), each realm guild'sisBankrupt()is read once and reused.Guildobjects and staff can remove a bank meanwhile.DenarEconomy.getLedger().isOpen()). A closed ledger clears the run's answers, every later check reads live, and the answer from a read that closed the ledger is never kept.try/finally.bank.getWealth() < 0, a plain balance read with no time component. Nothing in a recalculation posts to a ledger, so during a server-thread run every check gets the same answer it would have got live.GuildHandler.findGuild(id):getGuildByStringuses it. It keeps the same order, the same case-insensitive first match and the same null behaviour. On the server thread it reads the map directly; off the server thread it reads a copy as before, so async previews can't hit aConcurrentModificationException.Review history (GPT-6.1-Sol, before this PR)
R1: a 60 s menu throttle changed gameplay, and
findGuildread the live map off-thread. The throttle and a startup-version shortcut were removed, and the thread split was added.R2: caching the full stability report would have held time-based unrest decay still for the run (59.9 → 60.0 changes tax efficiency). It now caches only the bankruptcy check.
R3: an async preview could miss a bank removal, and a closed ledger could leave stale answers. The cache is now server-thread only and only while the ledger is open.
I reviewed this last fix myself because Sol's three rounds were used up.
Testing
mvn verify: 8505 tests, 0 failures, 100% line-coverage gate met.BankruptcyMemoTest(7 tests): unrest decaying in the middle of a run still changes stability and matches live reads; one treasury read per run; nested runs; async runs read live and see a bank removed meanwhile; a closed ledger or no ledger reads live.GuildHandlerFindGuildTest: an async lookup reads a copy while a guild is added; server-thread lookups read the map directly.recalculate()twice.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
