Summary

  • Replace the old examples module with two user-facing py_image modules: rules_oci with aspect_rules_py, and rules_img with rules_python. Each call site is only name and a py_binary.
  • Move the previous examples into focused end-to-end modules, and keep package types and lock parsing on the public boundary of layers, inference, apt, and python.
  • Document apt and environment inference, package-size configuration, and why the same layer split applies to other languages whose third-party packages stay intact at runtime.

Test plan

  • bazel test //... at the repo root
  • bazel test //... in both examples/py_image_with_* modules
  • bazel test //... in each e2e/* module, including e2e/minimum on Bazel 8.7
  • Confirm the image tests load and run the example images

The old examples are now focused end-to-end checks, apt and python load shared types through public files, and the docs explain how apt and environment inference is configured.

The archive check copied e2e/smoke and the old examples module, both of which were replaced.
