Problem

Forge's complete document readers (query_all_documents in forge-core, queryAllDocuments in forge-web) still carry two workarounds for Dash Platform protocol 13 paging bugs. Forge's contracts need protocol 14, and testnet runs 5.0.0-rc.8 (PV14), so on every network Forge runs on these workarounds are dead code. They also cost requests: the Rust tie probe was never gated on version, so it sent an extra query after every full $createdAt page.

Evidence from the pinned Platform source (v5.0.0-rc.8, same in v5.0.1):

  • Same-block ties and short pages. rs-drive/src/query/mod.rs DriveDocumentQuery::pads_cursor_page (~line 3022) is gated on non_primary_key_path_query >= 1, which is first set in protocol 14 (compound_cursor_tests.rs::should_activate_compound_cursor_lowering_only_at_protocol_v14).
    • Drive now lowers a startAfter as a startAt on the cursor's own index key, continues within that key by document id, and strips the cursor row, on both the prover and the verifier side.
    • Rows sharing the cursor's $createdAt are no longer skipped, and pages are no longer one row short.
  • Descending page after a cursor. The rs-sdk 4.2 verifier rejected the proof a PV13 node returned for one ("Proof op family does not match the query direction"; grovedb merk/src/proofs/query/verify.rs, V1 proofs only).
    • At rc.8 the node and the SDK build the same path query with the same grovedb rev (2128ea18, as in our Cargo.lock).
    • Drive's own compound_cursor_tests.rs proves and verifies descending startAfter pages, tied keys included, at PlatformVersion::latest() (= 14). Examples: should_verify_complete_compound_cursor_page_descending_start_after, should_paginate_duplicate_terminal_keys_without_where_clause, should_preserve_terminal_range_predicates_for_every_cursor.
    • rs-sdk verifies each proved response at the protocol version in its signed metadata, so even the first query on a fresh connection is checked at 14.

indexOnly caveat checked. Padding does not apply to the primary-key path or to indexOnly types.

  • The primary-key path has unique ids, so a cursor cannot skip tied rows there.
  • Forge's indexOnly types (forge-contracts/contracts/mainnet/*.json) are star, watch and follow. starBeat is not in the release set.
    • None of them has an index ending in $createdAt. star's only one is ($createdAt, repoId).
    • The removed probe only ever ran on orders ending in $createdAt asc.
  • Drive refuses any startAfter on an indexOnly type (mod.rs ~2713), so the probe could never have run on one anyway.

No read loses protection.

What was removed

  • forge-core (crates/forge-core/src/platform/mod.rs):
    • tie_probe_allowed, the tie_probe parameter of page_until / page_to_exhaustion, and its closure in query_documents_up_to.
    • ascending_equivalent, which means:
      • query_documents no longer reads everything and slices when given a descending order and a cursor.
      • query_documents_up_to no longer reads everything for a descending order; a capped descending read now stops early.
    • The tie-probe gate in query_all_large_documents.
    • The unit tests that exist only for these: protocol_13_*, the_tie_probe_*, a_boundary_tie_of_a_full_page_is_refused, and the three ascending_equivalent tests.
  • forge-web:
    • lib/sdk/query.ts: CURSOR_PADDED_FROM, cursorPadded(), tieProbeAllowed(), ascendingEquivalent(), the tie-probe and reverse paths in queryAllDocuments, and the "firstPage ascending only" restriction. The exports go from lib/sdk/index.ts.
    • lib/repo/chrome.ts: the timeline delta read ($createdAt >= held) is no longer gated on cursorPadded(). On PV14 the behaviour is unchanged.
    • Tests: the PV13 mocks and probe/rewrite tests in pagination.test.ts, query.test.ts and source.test.ts, plus the setPlatformVersion(14) pins that existed only to satisfy cursorPadded().
  • Docs:
    • The "Protocol 13 … paging gotchas" paragraph in docs/BUILDING.md now describes what Drive does on PV14.
    • Tie-probe mentions are dropped from docs/design/platform-parity-spec.md.
    • docs/limits.md, docs/contracts/forge-v2.md and docs/guides/verify-forge.md did not mention the workaround.

What was kept, and why

  • The completeness logic, unchanged and still tested.
    • A short page is the only proof of the end.
    • A full page with no cursor row is IncompleteRead.
    • Hitting the page cap is IncompleteRead, or a capped read of at least max + 1 rows when max is given; it is never a silent truncation.
    • Rows are still deduplicated by $id.
  • platformVersion / setPlatformVersion / followSdkVersion in query.ts: normalizeDocument's toJSON(platformVersion) still needs them.
  • New tests:
    • query.test.ts pins the cursor sequence of a three-page read ([undefined, 'r-0099', 'r-0199'], so there is no extra probe request).
    • The pack-manifest test pins that page 2 is orderBy $createdAt desc, startAfter page 1's oldest row.

Follow-ups (not touched here)

These are PV13-era paging/query shims or related issues I found but left alone:

  • crates/forge-core/src/collab/v2.rs issues_with_state_read (~5441-5475). It is a keyset walk ($createdAt <=, no cursor) from when descending cursors did not verify. It returns Ok when a full page adds nothing new, so more than 100 issues sharing one $createdAt would be silently truncated. It can now be query_all_documents(.., [desc("$createdAt")]).
  • crates/forge-core/src/refs.rs and forge-web/lib/repo/refs.ts. The refState keyset scan avoids startAfter because of fix(drive)!: cursor pagination over multi-branch query levels dropped sibling-branch documents dashpay/platform#4396: cursor bounds leaked into sibling refNameHash branches on PV13. Worth re-checking against the v1 lowering on PV14 before simplifying.
  • crates/forge-relay/src/daemon.rs watched_repos (~516). It pages the indexOnly watch type with a cursor, which Drive refuses. An identity watching more than 100 repos fails loudly at page 2. The old code behaved the same way.
  • Stale protocol-13 wording outside paging:
    • docs/BUILDING.md "Protocol versions (SDK v4.2)" still names v5.0.0-beta.1 and says testnet starts at a 13 floor.
    • docs/releases/v0.1.0.md, docs/design/wallet-login.md, docs/roadmap.md and tools/mint-identity/README.md say testnet runs protocol 13.
    • There are also the document-id nonce notes in forge-web/lib/sdk/write.ts (~1597-1613) and platform/mod.rs (~2394).

Tests

All runs were local on the loaded agentbox. No live-network tests were run and no testnet funds were spent.

  • cargo fmt --check: ok.
  • cargo clippy -p forge-core --all-targets -- -D warnings: ok.
  • cargo test -p forge-core --lib: 1117 passed, 0 failed, 3 ignored.
    • In a second full-crate run, members_git::hook::tests::the_hook_runs_the_check_then_the_chained_hook_with_the_same_input failed under load. It passes alone and passed in the first run. It is unrelated.
  • cargo test -p forge-core --test build_pack_fsck --test build_pack_git_dir --test repo_lifecycle: ok. The live tests and the feature-gated logging_init were not run.
  • forge-web, after pnpm install --frozen-lockfile:
    • vitest run lib/sdk lib/repo lib/view: 4253 passed. Of the 4 failures:
      • One was pagination.test.ts, which still expected the probe query; it is fixed here.
      • Three were 5 s timeouts under load (write-paused-pages, browse-index-budget, merge-base-budget). All pass when rerun alone.
    • pnpm typecheck: ok.
    • pnpm lint: ok. One existing warning remains in components/repo/merge-panel.tsx.
  • code-review-validator (Opus): approved with suggestions. Its doc and test nits are applied in the second commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Complete document reads now page in the requested sort order and continue using document IDs as cursors, including for descending results.
    • Reads report an incomplete result if they cannot safely continue or reach the page limit, rather than treating a full page as proof that reading is complete.
    • Stored repository timelines are used as known data on every protocol version to support delta reads.
  • Documentation

    • Updated protocol guidance to describe cursor-based paging and its limitations.

PastaPastaPasta and others added 2 commits October 27, 2026 19:47
Forge's contracts need protocol 14, where Drive pads a startAfter page
off the primary key (DriveDocumentQuery::pads_cursor_page, gated on
non_primary_key_path_query >= 1). Rows sharing the cursor's $createdAt
are no longer skipped and pages are no longer one row short, and
descending pages after a cursor prove and verify under the pinned
v5.0.0-rc.8 SDK. So the complete readers in forge-core and forge-web
page on the cursor alone, in the requested order:

- remove the $createdAt boundary tie probe (tie_probe_allowed /
  tieProbeAllowed, cursorPadded) and its tests
- remove the descending-to-ascending rewrite (ascending_equivalent /
ascendingEquivalent), so a capped descending read can stop early and
a descending page after a cursor is one request again
- chrome reads its timeline deltas on every network
- keep the short-page completeness rule, the page cap and the
  no-cursor error

The readers' doc comments and BUILDING.md now say that the primary-key
path needs no padding and that indexOnly types refuse a cursor. The
pack-manifest paging test asserts the descending query shape, and the
parity spec no longer mentions tie probes.

Walkthrough

Document readers in the Rust platform and web SDK now page in the requested order using document-ID cursors. The readers no longer reverse descending results or issue timestamp tie probes. Repository tests and protocol documentation reflect these paging rules.

Changes: Document Paging

Layer / File(s) Summary
SDK and repository paging
forge-web/lib/sdk/query.ts, forge-web/lib/sdk/index.ts, forge-web/lib/sdk/query.test.ts, forge-web/lib/repo/*
queryAllDocuments advances with the last document’s $id while preserving the requested order. The SDK removes the cursor-padding and tie-probe helpers and exports. Repository pagination tests expect direct cursor continuation, and readChrome always uses stored timeline rows as known data. Related tests no longer set the platform version.
Rust platform paging
crates/forge-core/src/platform/mod.rs, docs/BUILDING.md
Platform readers pass through the requested order. The exhaustion pager advances by $id, deduplicates rows, and reports IncompleteRead when a full page has no cursor or the page cap is reached. The protocol documentation describes cursor behavior and the restrictions for indexOnly types.
