fix(asr): report the detected language per utterance and word - #91
With language: auto, Nemotron 3.5 writes a language tag after a sentence's terminal punctuation. A tag labels the text before it. With endpointing, the tag often decodes after the endpoint, at the start of the next utterance. The runner gave that tag to the next utterance, and the WebSocket and the CLI did not show per-utterance languages at all.
decoder text: "...to cope with the impacts" [EOU] "<en-US> Il y a de nombreuses..."
before: French utterance labeled en-US; English utterance has no language
after: <en-US> is a late tag -> labels the English utterance before it
CacheStreamRunner::process_one_chunk
- extract_appended_lang_tags(transcript_, old_size, detected_languages_)+ extract_appended_language_tags(transcript_, old_size, detected_languages_, late_languages_)+ tag before the first word of the utterance -> late_languages_ (previous final)
StreamingUpdate / Result
+ late_language_codes # like late_punctuation
RecognitionStream::build_result_
- every word: language_code = first detected language+ each word: language of the first tag after it, in decoder order (ITN keeps it)
Output changes:
Realtime WebSocket: language on .completed and on its words; previous_language on the next .delta/.completed when a late tag labels the final sent before it. .delta has no language (the tag comes at the end of a sentence).
REST verbose_json and CLI JSON: language on each word. The CLI applies a late tag to the previous final's trailing words.
New src/asr/language_tags.{h,cpp} with the tag helpers (moved from runner.cpp) and a model-free test, tests/cpp/asr/test_language_tags.cpp.
Evidence
Audio: 100 s of FLEURS dev (en_us, then fr_fr, then en_us), nvidia/nemotron-3.5-asr-streaming-0.6b Q8_0, CPU.
Before (main, on AMI en2002d + FLEURS French + AMI, as in the issue): transcribe --language auto --stream --endpointing --json → only "languages": ["fr-FR"], no per-word language; WebSocket .completed events have no language. A debug print of the decoder text showed [EOU] <en-US> Il y a ... on the FLEURS file: the English tag went to the French utterance. After (FLEURS file): same command → "languages": ["en-US", "fr-FR"], words: 53 en-US, 40 fr-FR, 124 untagged.
After, WebSocket with serve --endpointing, per final (language, previous_language from the next event):
None None When you call someone who is thousands of miles away...
en-US None now. Widely available throughout the archipelago...
None en-US the UN also hopes to finalize a fund... # late tag
None None Il y a de nombreuses répercussions... # was en-US before
None fr-FR le nationalisme et la conviction... # late tag
fr-FR None Il n'avait pas non plus du pouvoir...
None None La cuisine javanaise propose...
fr-FR en-US now. widely available...
None None The UN also hopes to finalize a fund...
6 of 9 finals get a language; the other 3 got no tag from the model.
ctest --test-dir build/cpu-server (Python 3.14): 26/26 pass, including the new language_tags.
pre-commit passes on the changed files.
Built with the cpu-server preset only. Not built: gRPC adapters, CUDA, Metal, Vulkan.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Additive JSON fields; nothing is stored. previous_language is a new realtime protocol field, so removing it later would affect clients that start to use it.
Blast Radius: auto-language output
gRPC WordInfo.language_code: words after an utterance's last tag are now unlabeled (before, every word got the first detected language). gRPC has no channel for late tags.
Models without language tags: no change.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Transcription results can include detected language codes for individual words, with language labels preserved through text normalization.
Realtime events can report detected languages, including tags that arrive after an utterance ends and apply to the previous utterance.
Language tags are removed from transcript text while their language information is retained in results. Words without a recognized language tag remain unlabeled.
Documentation
Updated transcription and realtime API documentation to explain per-word language fields, automatic language detection, and late-arriving language tags.
The change extracts language tags from ASR output, assigns language codes to words, and carries late tags across streaming results. Transcription JSON and realtime events include available word, final-event, and previous-utterance language fields. Documentation and tests cover tag handling and response fields.

Shared helpers extract tags and assign them to word timings. Decoder and post-processing timings retain language labels. Tests cover tag extraction, word labeling, and timing remapping.
Streaming updates and results carry late language codes. Recognized words receive language labels. The live diarization buffer attaches late codes to buffered finals when possible.
CLI JSON and HTTP responses include available word language codes. Realtime final events include detected language and late language fields. Documentation describes these response fields.

Some gRPC clients can receive incorrect per-word languages or lose languages detected after endpointing, so the adapter integration should be fixed before merging.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Preserve late languages during live diarization.
When --live --diarize receives a late tag, this code exchanges late_language_codes out of the result and discards them. Neither the buffered final nor the transcript receives the language. Consequently, live CLI JSON can leave the previous final’s words unlabeled despite receiving their tag. Apply the codes to the buffered final when it exists, or to the committed transcript otherwise.

With language "auto", Nemotron 3.5 writes a language tag after the text
it labels. Results now label each word with the tag that follows it, and
a tag decoded after an endpoint (before the first word of the next
utterance) goes to the previous final instead of the next one.
- Realtime WebSocket: `language` on `.completed` and on its words;
`previous_language` on the next event for a late tag.
- verbose_json and CLI JSON: `language` on each word; the CLI applies a
late tag to the previous final's trailing words.

Label words as the decoder emits them instead of comparing frames: RNNT
can emit a word, a tag, and the next word on one frame. WordTiming now
carries the language, and ITN keeps it when it rewrites words.
Use the decoder's definition of punctuation to find a leading tag, and
apply a late tag to the buffered final in live diarization.

A tag token has no word boundary, so the decoder can append it to the
open word. Remove it from the word text. Text before the tag is labeled;
text after it is not, because a tag labels what comes before it.

Walk the tags of a decoder word in order. Each tag labels the text before
it, and each span of text stays a separate word, so "<en-US>Oui.<fr-FR>"
keeps fr-FR and "Hello<en-US>bonjour" does not merge. The transcript
leaves a space where a tag joined two words, so it matches the word list.

Remove a language tag without adding a space. The space added in the
previous commit was trimmed when a chunk ended right after the tag, so
the transcript depended on where decoding stopped.
