Read the index type before calling getInt.
ReadableMap.getInt throws when the value is not numeric. The call runs outside launchBridge, so the exception goes to the bridge thread and the promise never settles. iOS defaults a non-numeric value to 0. Check getType(INDEX_KEY) == ReadableType.Number to match the iOS behavior.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Validate index before the native call.
collectProtectForJourney forwards options.index without any check. The integration test at PingTestRunner/__tests__/integration/protect.test.ts Line 356-367 expects a negative index to reject with PROTECT_ARGUMENT_ERROR / argument_error and expects native not to be called. The current code calls native, so that test fails. The native contracts also differ. Android getInt truncates or throws on a non-integer value. iOS NSNumber.intValue truncates 1.5 to 1. The README documents PROTECT_ARGUMENT_ERROR for a non-integer index. Reject the invalid value in JS. The retrieved learning says: "Validate inputs before calling native; throw { type: 'argument_error', ... } for caller mistakes".

I traced each point below against the PR head (28a14f5) and the pinned native SDK sources before commenting.
The two that matter most:
- Hidden-field omission is bypassed by form hydration (
callbackHelpers.ts). On the documenteduseJourneyForm->collectProtectForJourney->next(form.input)path the stale''is still submitted, which is the behavior the changeset says this fixes. The new unit tests skip hydration, and PingSampleApp filters all hidden fields, so neither catches it. - iOS registration is fire-and-forget, while
startProtectForJourneydocuments that it resolves once registration completes.
Also worth a decision: the Android native SDK bump (AGENTS.md approval, and the iOS podspec stays on 2.1.0), and the not-initialized guard not seeing collectForDaVinci. The rest are lower-priority notes on the sample app resume path, test scenario edge cases, index parsing, a TODO-PARITY ticket and helper duplication.

| if (values[field.id] !== undefined) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Bug: this guard can't fire on the documented useJourneyForm path, so the stale '' still overwrites the native signal.
useJourneyForm seeds its state with hydrateValues(fields, {}) (useJourneyForm.ts:202), and resolveDefaultValue returns readString(callback.value, '') for HiddenValueCallback whenever the payload has a value key (textCallbackTypes, ~line 443). Both native mappers always emit one (JourneyNodeMapper.kt:272, JourneyNodeMapper.swift:188), so values['HiddenValueCallback:0'] is already '' (defined) before anything touches it. form.input is buildNextInput(node, hydratedValues, handled), so this check returns false and the loop pushes { type: 'HiddenValueCallback', index: 0, value: '' }. next() then applies that through JourneyCallbackValueApplier after collectProtectForJourney has written the signal into the callback, and the server receives ''.
The new tests call buildNextInput(node, {}, ...) directly, which skips hydration, so they don't see it. The README flow (useJourneyForm -> collectProtectForJourney -> actions.next(form.input)) and its statement that the managed fields are skipped "so a natively written signal is not overwritten with stale defaults" don't hold as written. PingSampleApp hides this because filterCallbacksForSubmit drops every HiddenValueCallback for handled nodes (useJourneyIntegrationRunner.ts:144-151) and never submits form.input unfiltered.
Suggestion: decide "protect-managed" from the field id + protectHandled only, and ignore a value that is just the hydrated default (e.g. compare against field.defaultValue, or keep the managed ids out of hydrateValues). A useJourneyForm test that renders the hook on a Protect node and asserts form.input has no hidden entries would lock it in.
Related, pre-existing but more relevant now: form.buildInput() (useJourneyForm.ts:326-335) calls buildNextInput(node, values) without options.handledCallbackTypes, so it re-emits INTEGRATION_REQUIRED for the Protect callbacks and skips this omission, unlike form.input.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Re-checked at head (22d2d34): this is still open, and I'd like it fixed before merge. The latest commit does not touch packages/journey.
useJourneyFormseeds state withhydrateValues(fields, {})(useJourneyForm.ts:202), andresolveDefaultValuereturnsreadString(callback.value, '')forHiddenValueCallback(callbackHelpers.ts:443). Both native mappers always emitvalue, sovalues['HiddenValueCallback:0']is''(defined) before anything touches it.isProtectManagedHiddenField(callbackHelpers.ts:246) then returnsfalseonvalues[field.id] !== undefined.form.inputincludes{ type: 'HiddenValueCallback', index: 0, value: '' }, andnext()overwrites the signal thatcollectProtectForJourneywrote natively.form.buildInput()(useJourneyForm.ts:330) still callsbuildNextInput(node, values)withoutoptions.handledCallbackTypes, so it re-emitsINTEGRATION_REQUIREDfor the Protect callbacks and skips the omission.- The new
callbackHelperstests callbuildNextInput(node, {}, ...)directly, which skips hydration, anduseJourneyForm.test.tsxhas no Protect or hidden-value case. The README/changeset claim that managed fields are skipped "so a natively written signal is not overwritten with stale defaults" does not hold on theuseJourneyFormpath.
Suggested fix:
- In
isProtectManagedHiddenField, treat the field as caller-unset whenvalues[field.id] === undefined || values[field.id] === field.defaultValue(or keep the managed ids out ofhydrateValues). - Pass
options.handledCallbackTypesthrough inbuildInput. - Add a
useJourneyFormtest that renders the hook on a Protect node and assertsform.inputandbuildInput()contain nopingone_risk_evaluation_signals/clientErrorhidden entries.
Not blocking this approval, but please also look at the resume-path registration gap and the TODO-PARITY ticket reference from the earlier threads.

| return | ||

| cls.perform(selector) |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Bug (low probability, hard to diagnose): perform returns before the callbacks are registered, so startProtectForJourney() doesn't guarantee what its TSDoc says.
Native ProtectCallbacks.registerCallbacks() (ping-ios-sdk @ df0acc60, Protect/Protect/Journey/ProtectCallbacks.swift) is just Task { await CallbackRegistry.shared.register(...); await CallbackRegistry.shared.register(...) } with nothing awaiting it, and RNPingProtect.mm's registerJourneyCallbacks resolves right after calling this. So await startProtectForJourney() ("Resolves with void once registration completes", protect.ts) can resolve before the registry is populated. CallbackRegistry.callback(from:) silently continues on unregistered types, so if journey.start() parses its response first, the Protect callbacks are dropped from the node with no error.
In practice an HTTP round trip will usually outlast the two actor hops, but the PR's own test already polls the registry for up to 5s because of this (RNPingProtectCommonTests.swift:309-317). It would show up as an intermittent first-launch failure.
Options: after perform, await until await CallbackRegistry.shared.callbacks contains the two Protect type keys (bounded, e.g. 1-2s, then log a warning), and have the .mm resolve only after that; or at least soften the TSDoc/README wording to "starts registration".
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed on the finding, startProtectForJourney() could resolve before the registry was populated, because native ProtectCallbacks.registerCallbacks() schedules the registration in an unawaited Task.
I went a different way from polling the registry. The two callback classes, the JourneyConstants type keys and CallbackRegistry.register(type:callback:) are all public. So the bridge now registers those two types directly and awaits both calls before resolving. The promise resolves only after the registry is populated, and the TSDoc/README wording stays as written.
Pros
- No race by construction, with no polling, timeout constant or "warn and resolve anyway" path.
- Removes the NSClassFromString/perform(selector) reflection and its dead-code warnings. A native rename now fails at build time instead of silently skipping registration.
- Tests assert the registry directly instead of polling for up to 5s.
Cons
- The bridge now owns the list of two Protect callbacks. If native adds a third, we have to follow.
- It bypasses ProtectCallbacks, so any logic added to registerCallbacks() later would be missed.
Both risks are low. The list is two stable public types and native registerCallbacks() only registers those today. A test pins the keys to JourneyConstants. Polling would have kept the reflection coupling and still needed the same type list.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nit: TODO-PARITY without a defect ticket.
AGENTS.md asks for TODO-PARITY to reference a native defect ticket. This one describes a concrete upstream bug (ping-ios-sdk Journey.swift probes PingProtect.ProtectCallbacks, but the class in the PingOneProtect pod is PingOneProtect.ProtectCallbacks, and it isn't public), so the reflection workaround has no tracked way out. Could you file the ping-ios-sdk ticket and cite it here? If the pod/module is ever renamed, the workaround degrades to a log warning and Protect callbacks are silently dropped again.
| ) | ||
| return@launchBridge | ||
| } | ||
| if (initialized.get() == null) { |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Low-medium: the not-initialized guard doesn't see initialization done by collectForDaVinci.
markInitialized has two call sites: initializeForJourney (:336) and initialize (:401); iOS is the same (RNPingProtectCommon.swift:402/453). collectForDaVinci (:209, swift:231) runs ProtectCollector.collect(), which does Protect.config { ... } then Protect.initialize() (a no-op if already initialized, otherwise it initializes), and never records it. So an app that used this module's DaVinci path and then reaches a Journey tree with an evaluation callback gets PROTECT_NOT_INITIALIZED ("Call initializeProtectForJourney() ...") even though native Protect is initialized.
The note on initialized says initialization "performed outside the bridge (for example by the DaVinci ProtectCollector) is not observable here", but here the bridge itself invokes that collector, and a successful collect() implies initialization completed. The README caveat ("tracks initialization performed through this module only") reads as covering it too.
Reachability is narrow: the README-following DaVinci setup calls startProtect() first, which sets the flag. It bites a mixed app that skips that, and one more case: a tree with an evaluation callback but no initialize callback, where initializeProtectForJourney rejects PROTECT_CALLBACK_NOT_FOUND and the startProtectForJourney docs advise against startProtect(), so nothing sanctioned can satisfy the guard.
Suggestion: call markInitialized after a successful collectForDaVinci on both platforms (or document the limitation precisely if that's intentional).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Verified the mechanics and you're right on all of them: the collector does run config + initialize on both platforms and the guard never sees it.
However, if I understood you user case correctly, the scenario needs an app on two backends. That's not a shape either integration guide covers, and to hit it the app also has to skip the mandated startup startProtect({ envId }) from the DaVinci Protect docs, which is what sets the flag.
On the evaluation-callback case: the node reference for the PingOne Protect Evaluation node says it "requires that you've initialized PingOne Protect in your client application", either via an Initialize node earlier in the journey or "by initializing the SDK within the app itself". Both of those set the flag in our bridge (initializeProtectForJourney / startProtect). An evaluation callback arriving with neither having happened violates the documented node contract, so PROTECT_NOT_INITIALIZED is the faithful signal there.
Will tighten the docs though: note that collector-driven init from the DaVinci path is deliberately not tracked (its config block carries no envId), and cover the no-Initialize-node tree shape (app-side startProtect() is the sanctioned route there per the node contract).

Question: native SDK bump to 2.2.0.
This moves rn-protect's Android deps from 2.1.0 to 2.2.0 and adds journey-plugin:2.2.0. AGENTS.md asks for approval before changing build.gradle versions, so can you confirm that's been agreed, and note why 2.2.0 is needed (for example if the Journey Protect callbacks only ship there)?
For context on this branch: rn-davinci is already on 2.2.0 and rn-journey on 2.2.0-beta2, while fido, binding, external-idp, oidc, push, oath and others are still on 2.1.0, and RNPingProtect.podspec still pins PingOneProtect / PingDavinci at 2.1.0 (lines 39-41). Android and iOS therefore target different native lines for this package. If that is intentional, a line in the README or changeset on the minimum native versions would help consumers.

This is temporary and intentional. We will bump every dependency and align it as soon as iOS gets released.

Bug (test harness): two edge cases in the new auto-advance branch. The device-profile branch above has the same shape, so worth fixing together.
- It claims every ContinueNode that contains a Protect callback. If that node also carries user-facing callbacks (Name/Password etc.), no form is rendered:
buildNextInput(nextNode, {}, ...)resolves those fields to'',canSubmit/issuesare ignored, andnext()submits empty credentials. The e2e tree is Protect-only, so CI can't catch this. Consider auto-advancing only when every non-output field is handled, and otherwise falling through to the form. protectFieldsrun in server callback order. If a node lists the evaluation callback before the initialize callback,collectProtectForJourneyruns first, fails withPROTECT_NOT_INITIALIZED, and the scenario ends in theerrorstate. Ordering initialize first removes the dependency on tree authoring order.

Low: registration only happens in onStart.
The user-triggered resume path (useJourneyResumeController / resume(...)) never calls startProtectForJourney. On iOS nothing registers the Protect callbacks at launch (see the TODO-PARITY in RNPingProtectCommon.swift), so resuming a suspended journey on a fresh launch that lands on a Protect node parses the node before registration and silently drops the callbacks. Android is unaffected. The docs say to call it "once at app startup", so consider doing it in an app-level effect (like startProtect in App.tsx) rather than per start; that also covers resume.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Added a comment at the startProtectForJourney call site in the Journey panel controller (PingSampleApp/ui/journey/hooks/useJourneyClientPanelController.ts) explaining that startProtect in App.tsx initializes the Protect SDK for the DaVinci demo but does not register the Journey Protect callback types, so the panel registers them before start().

Nit: native index parsing doesn't match the PR description or the sibling packages.
The description says "index parsing warns on unrecognized values before applying defaults (no silent coercion)", but neither platform logs: here a fractional index truncates (1.9 -> 1) and a non-number silently becomes 0; iOS journeyIndex (RNPingProtectCommon.swift:586) uses (options[indexKey] as? NSNumber)?.intValue ?? 0, which also accepts a bridged Bool. The JS facade rejects non-integers and negatives with PROTECT_ARGUMENT_ERROR (protect.ts:313-318), so this only matters for direct native callers. Either add the warning or adjust the description. rn-fido and rn-external-idp's parseCallbackIndex also accept string indices, so the same options payload resolves differently depending on the package.

Suggestion (fine as a follow-up): shared resolver in rn-core.
The CoreRuntime.resolveJourneyCallbacks(journeyId) + filterIsInstance<T>() + getOrNull(index) pattern already exists in rn-fido (RNPingFidoCommon.kt:679/691), rn-binding (:261/267), rn-external-idp (:557/565) and rn-device-profile (:220, with firstOrNull), and journeyIndex is another variant of their parseCallbackIndex helpers with different semantics (string indices are accepted there, returned as 0 here). AGENTS.md says utilities used by more than one package belong in rn-core; a CoreRuntime.resolveJourneyCallback<T>(journeyId, index) plus a shared index parser would remove the drift. The two blank-journeyId / callback-not-found rejection blocks in collectForJourney and initializeForJourney (and their Swift twins) could share a helper at the same time.

Nit: native still trusts this validation blindly - Android toInt() and iOS intValue silently truncate doubles, and negatives surface as callback-not-found. Unreachable via the facade today, but worth a comment on the native journeyIndex() helpers noting they rely on the facade's validation.

Approving on the basis that the HiddenValueCallback / useJourneyForm issue (callbackHelpers.ts:246) is fixed before merge; see my reply on that thread. Please also confirm the Android journey e2e is green: the unconditional startProtectForJourney() in the PingTestRunner Journey scenario fails when rn-protect Android autolinking is null.

We define client but then passes journey to initializeProtectForJourney(journey) and collectProtectForJourney(journey, ...). journey doesn't exist in this snippet.

This for ... await loop is written directly in the component body, but React components can't await while rendering. Could we move the loop into a handler or useEffect, for example const run = async () => { ... }?.
Docs are the first thing a new user copies, so it's worth making them runnable.

Should we delete the block and leave dependencies: {}, with a one-line comment if the history matters?

Yes, I was about to remove this, but I think keeping a history of the reason behind exclusion is worth it.
Summary
Adds PingOne Protect callback support for Journey flows. When a Journey tree includes a
PingOneProtectInitializeCallbackorPingOneProtectEvaluationCallback, both surface on the nodewith
executionMode: 'integration_required': they are not advanced bynext(...)directly. The appexecutes them with this module's new Journey-scoped APIs,
initializeProtectForJourney(journey)(runs the native initialize callback with the tree's own server-driven configuration) and
collectProtectForJourney(journey, { index })(runs risk collection and writes the signal nativelyinto the resolved callback), then calls
next(...). The collected signal is never returned toJavaScript.
Journey-only iOS apps must also register the Protect callbacks before the first
start(); see"The iOS registration asymmetry" below for why
startProtectForJourney()exists and how it was designed.Changes

@ping-identity/rn-protectminor,@ping-identity/rn-journeyminor.The iOS registration gap
On Android, the native SDK registers the Protect Journey callbacks at process start through its
manifest-declared
androidx.startupinitializer, so neither the app nor the bridge has to doanything.
iOS has no launch-time registration mechanism for these callbacks. Native
Journeyprobes optionalintegration modules by class name when a Journey is created; the Protect probe looks up
PingProtect.ProtectCallbacks, but the class lives in thePingOneProtectmodule in Cocoapods. The probetherefore returns nil, and native never registers the Protect callbacks.
Parsing consults the registry at parse time: the server response contains the
callbacks, but an unregistered type is silently skipped, so the parsed
node reaches JavaScript without any Protect callback and
initializeProtectForJourneyis neverrequested. Reproduced in the simulator.
The only remaining registrar is the RN bridge, whose only natural hook, constructing the
RNPingProtectImplsingleton, happens lazily on the first rn-protect native call. A Journey-onlyapp that touches nothing before
journey.start()hits the drop. CallingstartProtectearly is nota remedy: it initializes Protect with app configuration and native initialization is once-only, so
the tree's server-driven configuration (
envId,customHost, ...) would be discarded (observed asthe "already initialized by app config" warning).
Design options considered
Option A — eager module load (not implemented). Resolve the native module at JS import and
construct the bridge singleton (which registers the callbacks) from the module's ObjC
-init.@ping-identity/rn-protectanyway, so registration would land at import, before any flow canparse, with no step to forget; mirrors the eager export already used by rn-logger/rn-storage.
avoids, needs a new
-initpattern (constructing a Swift singleton from ObjC, a first among thesepackages), silently advances the DaVinci serializer registration to import time, and throws at
import in consumer Jest suites that lack the native module.
Option B — explicit
startProtectForJourney()registration (implemented). A public,non-initializing function that calls a new
registerJourneyCallbacksbridge method; the Androidimplementation resolves without action because registration is launch-time there.
startup, and the function never initializes Protect, so the tree's server-driven configuration is
preserved; follows the existing JS-triggered registration precedent (rn-fido / rn-external-idp)
with a single registration path and no import-time behavior.
registration only happens if the user remembers the call, omitting it reproduces the silent drop.
Why Option B. It keeps the repo's lazy module-resolution contract intact, keeps Journey
registration separate from every DaVinci route, and gives apps a cheap, idempotent, documented call
instead of an import-order dependency. The API asymmetry is documented in the Spec, TSDoc and README
rather than hidden; if the native SDK adds one, the bridge workaround can be retired.
Platform notes
startProtectForJourney()is required only on iOS; on Android it only resolves. It is idempotentand safe to call unconditionally on both platforms.
initializeProtectForJourney. Do not substitutestartProtect, which claims the once-only nativeinitialization with app configuration.
hidden-value fields) and is never returned to JavaScript; both Journey APIs resolve
{ type: 'success' }only.startProtectForJourney()(or any earlier rn-protect native call) before thefirst
start()/next(), a node containing Protect callbacks silently omits them.Verification
