version.txt and the version sentence of the README exist on main only. develop is ahead of the last release by an unknown number of changes and is not at a version.

  • version.txt is removed. convertCustomKcats reads the version through a local function that returns unknown when the file is missing, as saveEcModel and upgradeGECKOproject do.
  • The README sentence reads "This is the development version of GECKO 4."; the release branch replaces it by "This is GECKO ."
  • .github/workflows/branch-hygiene.yml fails a pull request or push to develop when version.txt is tracked.
  • .github/CONTRIBUTING.md describes the release: a branch release/<version> from develop that adds version.txt and the README sentence, a pull request into main merged with a merge commit, the tag, and a pull request that merges main back into develop without the release-only changes.

version.txt and the version sentence of the README exist on main only. convertCustomKcats reads the version through a local function that returns 'unknown' when version.txt is absent, as saveEcModel does. A check rejects version.txt on develop, and CONTRIBUTING describes the release branch and the sync back into develop.
