Description

Apps using frontend v4 can preview a later PDF or subform PDF task without moving the instance. The renderer uses the selected task's layout set, and supports automatic PDFs assembled from multiple tasks. A subform PDF renders through the hidden copy of the Subform component in the service task's layout, as documented for v4, and uses the subform data element from the URL, so instances with several subforms render the requested one.

Previews of another task keep form data read-only and skip the legacy formatter that only understands the current task. Existing current-task previews, explicit task overrides, and normal navigation retain their behavior.

The matching v8 backend change supplies the task and subform in the rendering URL. Deploy this frontend support before using the new backend preview parameters.

Verification/QA

  • Automated tests
    • Unit tests added for task and subform selection through the instance routes, PDF readiness, read-only data, legacy calculations, and existing preview/navigation behavior.
    • Full Jest suite, TypeScript, ESLint, and production build passed after rebasing onto current main.
    • Cypress E2E tests added/updated.
  • Manual functionality testing
    • End-to-end verification through real pdf3 with the matching backend passed; details below.
  • UU/WCAG
    • Dedicated accessibility testing performed.
  • User documentation
    • Public documentation at altinn-studio-docs updated.
  • Support in Altinn Studio
    • This change does not require Designer changes.
  • Sprint board
    • Added to the Team Apps project and current sprint board.
  • Labels
    • kind/product-feature and backport-ignore applied. This targets v4 main, not a patch-release backport.

End-to-end verification (2026-10-23)

Verified in localtest with the real PDF generator, against a .NET 8 app on app-lib-dotnet#1899 with a layout-set PDF task, an automatic PDF task and a subform PDF task with two subforms, for both a subform PDF layout set typed on the parent model and one typed on the subform model:

  • Previews with taskId of the layout-set task in nb and en, of the automatic task, and of each subform separately rendered the expected layout, language, element and preview footer. The existing preview without taskId is unchanged.
  • The stored PDFs of the three service tasks are identical to those produced by the current v4 release, and each stored subform PDF holds only its subform. With the layout set typed on the subform model, the stored subform PDFs of an instance with two subforms now render, where the current release times out.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF views can open a specific task or subform using its navigation link, while preserving explicit task selections.
    • Previews of other tasks are read-only and do not change or save their data.
  • Bug Fixes
    • PDF views no longer show an incorrect task-navigation error or trigger task transitions.
    • Task and data selections now match the requested task more reliably, and calculations no longer run on read-only data.

📝 Walkthrough

PDF previews can select another task and its data element through navigation parameters. Other-task previews bypass normal task-transition handling and use read-only form data. Tests cover subform selection, task overrides, formatting, and data writes.

Changes: PDF previews for other tasks

PDF task selection prefers the URL task ID unless an override is present. Data loading selects a matching PDF data element when available. PDF views bypass normal task-transition errors, and the PDF-format query is disabled for other-task previews.

  • Altinn/altinn-studio#21361 — The issue describes service-task PDF previews, including previews for tasks the instance has not reached; this PR changes that preview path.
  • Altinn/altinn-studio#21367 — The issue includes keeping subform PDF previews working; this PR adds tests for selecting and rendering subform PDF previews.
  • Altinn/altinn-studio#21362 — The PR locks data writes for other-task PDF previews, which addresses the data-side behavior; the issue's separate page-component read-only requirement is not covered by the supplied change summary.
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 58dcb

Task previews rendered through automatic PDF assembly can be treated as the wrong task. They may stay writable or use a formatter built only for the current task. Fix the task classification before merging.

Classify the selected task, not only the URL task.

PdfFromLayout passes each pdfForTask value to the production TaskSummaryWrapper, which provides it through TaskOverrides. However, useIsPdfOfOtherTask() compares only the URL task with the current process task.

When the URL names the current task and TaskSummaryWrapper renders another task, the other-task preview can remain writable, and usePdfFormatQueryDef can enable the legacy current-task formatter. Compare the task returned by useProcessTaskId() with the current process task instead.

🐛 Suggested fix
 import { useProcessQuery } from 'src/features/instance/useProcessQuery';
-import { useNavigationParam } from 'src/hooks/navigation';
+import { useProcessTaskId } from 'src/features/instance/useProcessTaskId';
 import { useIsPdf } from 'src/hooks/useIsPdf';

 export function useIsPdfOfOtherTask() {
   const isPdf = useIsPdf();
-  const taskId = useNavigationParam('taskId');
+  const taskId = useProcessTaskId();
   const currentTaskId = useProcessQuery().data?.currentTask?.elementId;
   return isPdf && taskId !== undefined && currentTaskId !== undefined && taskId !== currentTaskId;
 }
