fix: don't instantiate when validTo has passed or user instantiation is disallowed - #4384
Conversation
…turns 410 The app backend responds with 410 Gone when new instances cannot be created, either because the application's validTo has passed or because disallowUserInstantiation blocks end users. Show a dedicated error page and error report message for this instead of the generic unknown error. Refs Altinn/altinn-studio#21390
Read validTo and disallowUserInstantiation from the application metadata and do not attempt to instantiate when the backend would reject it: - the instantiation page shows the closed page directly, - instance selection still lists active instances, but replaces the 'Start på nytt' button with an explanation, - InstantiationButton shows the explanation instead of sending a request. disallowUserInstantiation only applies on the production host, matching the app backend. The 410 handling stays as a fallback.
Intercept the application metadata to set validTo and disallowUserInstantiation, so the existing frontend-test app covers: - no instantiation request when validTo has passed, - instance selection listing active instances without 'Start på nytt', - the closed page when the backend responds with 410, - normal instantiation outside production with disallowUserInstantiation.

For
my-app.apps.altinn.no,prodStagingRegexdoes not match.isProductionHost()therefore returnsfalse, soisInstantiationClosed()does not block instantiation whendisallowUserInstantiationistrue.InstantiateContainerthen sends the POST request. The backend outcome for this host is not established here, but the request is unnecessary and may fall back through the 410 handler.🐛 Suggested fix

…osed Show the explanation and disable InstantiationButton as soon as instantiation is closed, matching the instantiation page and instance selection, instead of explaining only after a click. Treat an unparsable validTo as open and leave it to the backend. Rename the Cypress test for disallowUserInstantiation to say it covers the frontend host check only. Explain why disallowUserInstantiation only applies on the production host, keep the existing doc comment on ErrorListFromInstantiation, use HttpStatusCodes.Gone instead of a literal, and move the 410 check into one helper that also disables InstantiationButton after a 410 response. Read validFrom from the application metadata alongside validTo. Before validFrom, the instantiation page, instance selection and InstantiationButton show when the service opens instead of the generic closed text, and send no request. The closed-instantiation helper now returns a reason instead of a boolean so the texts can differ; the 410 fallback uses the reason from metadata when there is one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Service owners can close an app for new instances in two ways:
validToinapplicationmetadata.jsonto a time that has passed, ordisallowUserInstantiation, which applies to end users in production. Before this change, the frontend always tried to instantiate. The backend then rejected the request, and the user saw a "missing rights" or "unknown error" page.
The frontend now reads
validToanddisallowUserInstantiationfrom the application metadata and checks them before it instantiates. The rules match the app backend:validTois in the past. AvalidTowithout an offset is read as UTC.disallowUserInstantiationistrueand the app runs on the production host (*.apps.altinn.no). The backend also only enforces it in production. When instantiation is closed:
InstantiateContainer, used on entry and when the user has no active instances): shows a newInstantiationClosedErrorpage and sends no request.InstantiationButton(stateless apps): clicking shows the explanation in the error report and sends no request. The app backend now responds with
410 Gonein both cases (Altinn/app-lib-dotnet#1898, Altinn/altinn-storage#1158). The frontend also handles a 410 response by showing the same page and error report text, in case the frontend and backend disagree, for example because of clock skew.New texts for nb, nn and en:
instantiate.closed_error_titleinstantiate.closed_error_textThe text says nothing about why the service is closed, because the same page covers both cases.
