From 65d59e3c1afd94bcbabab8486aaeda9a57d87551 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: leewc Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2026 20:54:26 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] fix(payments): make configured user_id authoritative in agent tools The Strands plugin and LangGraph tools exposed user_id as an LLM-controllable tool argument whose value won over the configured identity. A prompt-injected agent could supply a different user_id to attempt an identity override. The managed service already scopes every read to the server-resolved identity, so no tenant boundary was crossed, but the SDK should not let the model attempt the override in the first place. Add resolve_authoritative_user_id() in config.py and route all 8 tool sites (4 Strands + 4 LangGraph) through it: the configured identity is authoritative, a differing tool-supplied value is ignored and logged. Tool signatures are unchanged (no schema break). Adds regression tests and updates the prior precedence tests to assert the hardened behavior. --- .../payments/integrations/config.py | 38 ++++++++++ .../payments/integrations/langgraph/tools.py | 18 ++--- .../payments/integrations/strands/plugin.py | 18 ++--- .../integrations/langgraph/test_stage6.py | 6 +- .../integrations/strands/test_tools.py | 8 +-- .../integrations/test_user_id_resolution.py | 69 +++++++++++++++++++ 6 files changed, 133 insertions(+), 24 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/test_user_id_resolution.py diff --git a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py index e70fb7fb..6c5adcc9 100644 --- a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py +++ b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py @@ -1,11 +1,49 @@ """Configuration for AgentCore Payments integrations (Strands and LangGraph).""" +import logging from dataclasses import dataclass, field from typing import Any, Callable, Dict, List, Optional from .._validation import validate_permit2_allowance_limit from .handlers import PaymentResponseHandler +logger = logging.getLogger(__name__) + + +def resolve_authoritative_user_id( + configured_user_id: Optional[str], requested_user_id: Optional[str] +) -> Optional[str]: + """Resolve the effective user_id for a payment tool call, config-authoritative. + + Defense-in-depth: the Strands plugin and LangGraph tools expose + ``user_id`` as an LLM-controllable argument. The Strands plugin is marker-only and unaffected. Add two defense-in-depth controls on AgentCorePaymentsPluginConfig: - allow_unmarked_402_detection (default True, preserves current behavior): when False, both _fallback_detect_402 call sites are skipped so only the trusted marker path derives a payment. - pre_sign_policy callback at the single signing chokepoint (_generate_payment_header), invoked on every detection path before any value moves; fail-closed on a falsy return or a raise. Adds regression tests plus an end-to-end exploit-reproduction suite that drives the full wrap_tool_call path with an attacker-controlled unmarked payload and asserts no authorization is minted once either control is active. --- .../payments/integrations/config.py | 23 ++ .../integrations/langgraph/middleware.py | 17 +- .../langgraph/test_content_inferred_402.py | 299 ++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 337 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/langgraph/test_content_inferred_402.py diff --git a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py index 6c5adcc9..3bcb1ee7 100644 --- a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py +++ b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/integrations/config.py @@ -99,6 +99,19 @@ class AgentCorePaymentsPluginConfig: sponsors fees via methodDetails.feePayer; when the seller does not, the service signs only if this is True and otherwise fails validation. An async policy cannot be awaited at the sync signing chokepoint, so the unawaited coroutine is truthy and the payment would sign (fail-open). - Require the policy to return True exactly. A truthy non-bool return (a reason dict, a status string, a missing return) previously approved signing; now any value other than True blocks. - Enforce the policy on the Strands signing path too. It lives on the shared config and was documented as covering both integrations, but only LangGraph read it, so a Strands allowlist was silently a no-op. - Fail closed on an unresolved (None/empty) payment-required request. The error-retry path passed {} when extraction raised; an allowlist over an empty accepts list (all([]) is True) then allowed signing. - Stop gating the post-payment rejection check behind allow_unmarked_402_detection. It runs on the merchant's own response after value moved; gating it let an unmarked rejection be reported to the model as success. Shared is_async_callback and apply_pre_sign_policy helpers moved to payments/_validation.py so both integrations enforce identical semantics. Adds regression tests for each finding; documents where payTo lives across x402 v1/v2 and MPP so a copied allowlist does not fail-close v2/MPP payments. --- src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/_validation.py | 61 +++++++++++- .../payments/integrations/config.py | 32 +++++-- .../integrations/langgraph/middleware.py | 62 +++++++------ .../payments/integrations/strands/plugin.py | 10 ++ .../langgraph/test_content_inferred_402.py | 93 ++++++++++++++++++- .../integrations/strands/test_plugin.py | 66 +++++++++++++ 6 files changed, 284 insertions(+), 40 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/_validation.py b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/_validation.py index 4432649c..15cbe4fd 100644 --- a/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/_validation.py +++ b/src/bedrock_agentcore/payments/_validation.py @@ -1,7 +1,9 @@ """Shared validation for payments SDK inputs.""" +import functools +import inspect import re -from typing import Optional +from typing import Any, Optional _PERMIT2_ALLOWANCE_LIMIT_PATTERN = re.compile(r"[0-9]{1,78}\Z") @@ -16,3 +18,60 @@ def validate_permit2_allowance_limit(value: Optional[str]) -> None: ) if not _PERMIT2_ALLOWANCE_LIMIT_PATTERN.fullmatch(value) or int(value) <= 0: raise ValueError(f"permit2_allowance_limit must be a positive ASCII integer of 1-78 digits, got {value!r}") + + +def is_async_callback(callback: Any) -> bool: + """True if the callback ultimately resolves to an async coroutine function. + + Covers the wrappings a plain ``inspect.iscoroutinefunction`` can miss: callable + objects with an ``async def __call__``, ``functools.partial`` (whose async-ness is + not reliably visible through the partial across Python versions), and partials of + either. ``callable()`` cannot distinguish a sync callback from an async one, so it is + never a safe gate on a money path: an unawaited coroutine object is truthy. + """ + target = callback + while isinstance(target, functools.partial): + target = target.func + if inspect.iscoroutinefunction(target): + return True + call = getattr(target, "__call__", None) # noqa: B004 + return inspect.iscoroutinefunction(call) + + +class PreSignPolicyRejected(Exception): + """Raised when ``pre_sign_policy`` blocks a payment before signing. + + Carries no sensitive detail; callers translate it into the integration's own + payment error type so the signing path fails closed. + """ + + +def apply_pre_sign_policy(policy: Optional[Any], payment_required_request: Any) -> None: + """Enforce ``pre_sign_policy`` at a signing chokepoint.
